When the temperature starts climbing, most of us think about finding the nearest beach, turning the air conditioning up a notch, or standing in front of the open fridge pretending we're looking for something to eat. A massage probably isn't the first thing that springs to mind.
Perhaps it should be?!
While many people think of massage as something to enjoy during the colder months – when muscles are stiff and shoulders are hunched up somewhere near your ears – the truth is that a massage can be just as beneficial during the height of summer. In fact, there are several reasons why it may feel even better. Your muscles still need some TLC.
Hot weather has a habit of making us more active, but doing different things to what we would do in the cooler months. We swim more, spend longer in the garden, explore holiday destinations, and wander around markets convincing ourselves that we'll only be five minutes, before discovering we've accidentally covered eight kilometres in flip-flops that were clearly designed by someone with a grudge against feet.
By the end of the day your calves are complaining, your lower back has developed opinions of its own, and your shoulders are wondering why you insisted on carrying that enormous beach bag full of "essentials" that you never actually used. Massage can help release that accumulated tension, leaving muscles feeling looser, lighter and ready for whatever the next sunny day brings.
You leave the house with perfectly respectable ankles and return looking as though your feet have slowly begun merging with your legs. We Brits even have a word for this: ‘cankles’. We love a hybrid! Warm weather often causes blood vessels to widen, allowing fluid to collect in the lower legs, feet and hands. Gentle massage encourages healthy circulation and supports the lymphatic system, helping to move excess fluid away from these areas. Many clients report they leave feeling lighter and less swollen than when they arrived.
One of the simplest pleasures of a summer massage has nothing to do with muscles at all. Imagine stepping out of the blazing sunshine into a cool, comfortable room. The frantic pace of the day disappears. Your phone is switched off. For the next 60 or 90 minutes, nobody wants anything from you except to relax. Sometimes that's exactly what your body has been asking for all along.
We've all experienced those evenings when it's simply too hot to sleep – especially at the moment when the bedroom air conditioning needs re-gassing and the guy who is coming to do it keeps promising “mañana”…with mañana turning into 3 weeks. True story – and still ongoing! Anyway, enough of my woes – you turn the pillow over every five minutes, move from side to side in the hope that one of them will remain unstuck from the bottom sheet for just enough time for your to doze off and count sheep that are probably sweating too.
Massage encourages the body to relax, reduces stress hormones and promotes the release of those lovely feel-good endorphins. While it can't lower the outside temperature, it can leave both body and mind in a far calmer state, making a restful night's sleep much more likely.
And let’s not forget that heat has an uncanny ability to make even the nicest people a little, shall we say, crispy around the edges. Everything feels like more effort. Tempers shorten. Concentration disappears. Even deciding what to have for dinner becomes an Olympic event. Taking some time out for yourself can make a remarkable difference. Massage isn't simply about easing physical tension – it gives your mind permission to slow down as well. It’s a chance to mentally push CTRL+ALT+DELETE and reset
If you are planning a massage during hot weather, there are just a few simple things to remember:
• Drink plenty of water before and after your appointment.
• Avoid arriving dehydrated or immediately after several hours in direct sunshine.
• If you have to eat beforehand, eat only a light meal at least an hour before the appointment, preferably a little before that. Fish and chips 10 minutes before the appointment will not be a good look!
• If you've managed to turn yourself the colour of a ripe tomato, let your therapist know. Sunburned skin needs gentle handling, and in some cases it may be sensible to postpone treatment until you're more comfortable.
Of course, as a naturist masseur, summer brings an extra layer of comfort. Without clothing trapping heat against the skin, many clients find the experience feels cooler, freer and even more relaxing. Lot of my clients have never had a naturist massage before and everyone that has tried it for the first time has always said how much they enjoyed it.
So the next time the sun is blazing and you're wondering how to cool off, don't just think about the beach or another cold drink. Treat yourself to some time on the massage couch instead. Some quality time on the massage couch could be the coolest decision you make all summer.
