David Ellis - Human Insight What does it mean to be fully human? At David Ellis, Human Insight, we explore Heartfulness • Self-Development • Personal Growth and Kindness. Be Your Heart

Being fully human does not mean denying the darker parts of ourselves. We all experience anger, fear, jealousy, resentment, and judgment, just as we experience Love, compassion, kindness, Hope and trust. Our Shadow is part of us, but it does not have to define us. Perhaps our greatest human freedom lies in becoming conscious of both — recognising when the Shadow speaks, understanding why it is there, and then choosing what we allow to guide our actions. We cannot always control what we feel, but we can choose what we become.
Acknowledge your Shadow. Nurture your Light. Choose Your Heart.

To be fully human is to recognise that we have the capacity both to embrace others with compassion and to diminish them through judgement. Judgement is easy — we see a moment, a behaviour or a choice and convince ourselves that we understand the whole person. Compassion asks more of us. It asks us to look beyond what is immediately visible and remember that every person carries a story, struggles and experiences we may know nothing about. We do not have to agree with someone to understand them, nor excuse their actions in order to show compassion. Sometimes it simply means allowing our Heart to speak before our ego decides who they are.
Choose understanding. Choose compassion. Choose to Be Your Heart.

Trust and fear are both part of the human experience. Fear has its purpose — it can warn us of genuine danger and help to keep us safe. But so much of the fear we carry is not about what is happening now; it is created by what the mind imagines might happen next. Trust asks us to loosen our grip on those imagined outcomes and listen to something deeper within ourselves. It does not mean blindly believing that everything will be easy. It means trusting ourselves to face whatever comes.
Choose Trust. Choose courage. Choose to Be Your Heart.

To be fully human is to know both Hope and despair.
There will be moments when life challenges us, when the mind tells us there is no way forward, and fear begins to overshadow possibility. Despair asks us to believe that what we see today is all that can ever be. Hope comes from somewhere deeper. It is the quiet voice within that reminds us that circumstances change, wounds heal, new paths appear, and tomorrow has yet to be written. We cannot always choose what happens to us, but we can choose which voice we allow to guide us.
Choose Hope. Choose a possibility. Choose to Be Your Heart.

To be fully human is not to pretend that we are only light. We carry contradictions within us — compassion and anger, courage and fear, Love and hate. The difference lies in which part of ourselves we choose to nurture. Hate is fed by the mind: by ego, judgment, resentment, and the stories we continue to tell ourselves. Love asks something deeper of us. It asks us to move beyond the noise of the mind and return to the truth of who we are. We may experience both light and shadow, but we do not have to give them equal power.
Choose Love. Choose truth. Choose to Be Your Heart.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FULLY HUMAN?
Some people live with integrity. Others do not.
It is not our role to judge them, condemn them or decide who they should be. Their choices belong to them.
Our responsibility is much closer to home — to act honestly, take responsibility for our own choices, acknowledge when we get things wrong, and ensure that our actions remain aligned with what we claim to believe.
We cannot control the integrity of others.
We can only take responsibility for ourselves.
Perhaps that is part of what it means to be fully human.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FULLY HUMAN?
We are only ever a heartbeat away from death.
We always have been.
Yet so much of our lives can be spent worrying about tomorrow, regretting yesterday, or waiting for some future moment when everything will finally feel right.
But we are alive now.
This moment — this breath, this heartbeat, this opportunity to Love, laugh, experience and connect — is the gift.
Perhaps we don't need to fear the fragility of life. Perhaps we need to allow it to remind us how precious being alive really is.
Spend time in Gratitude for the gift of Living.
Be Your Heart.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FULLY HUMAN?
People with a strong internal compass often struggle to fit in.
Not because they are necessarily right more often than everyone else, but because they continually compare behaviour with principle. They question whether what they are doing aligns with what they believe — even when that questioning makes life more difficult.
For them, compromise can sometimes feel uncomfortable, particularly when belonging requires silence, conformity or acting against what feels deeply true.
But having an internal compass does not mean believing we are always right. Integrity also requires the humility to question ourselves, reconsider our beliefs and admit when we are wrong.
Perhaps being fully human is learning to stand by our principles without losing our ability to listen, question and grow.

You'll find versions beginning with Communists, others with Socialists, and different combinations of Jews, trade unionists, Jehovah's Witnesses and people with disabilities.

Niemöller apparently didn't compose one definitive poem and publish it. He expressed the idea repeatedly and somewhat spontaneously in post-war speeches, changing the groups he mentioned. The version I have above is therefore one of several versions of what is better described as a confession or statement rather than a poem.

I think knowing Niemöller's history transforms its meaning. It isn't: “Look what terrible people allowed to happen.” It's much closer to: “I was one of the people who failed to speak when I could have. I eventually learned what that silence costs.”

That is probably why it has survived for eighty years. It asks an extremely uncomfortable question of every generation: Will I defend another person's humanity only when I identify with them, or because they are human?

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE FULLY HUMAN?
Never stop questioning integrity — in ourselves or in others.
A conclusion reached through thought alone gives us only part of the answer. The mind can analyse, rationalise and justify, but it cannot always tell us what feels deeply true.
The deeper answer emerges when thought and feeling come together in harmony — when the intelligence of the mind meets the wisdom of the Heart.
Perhaps integrity begins there: when what we think, what we feel, what we say and how we live are all in alignment.
Be Your Heart.
