Today, 24 August 2026, I had the pleasure of receiving in my office several distinguished global health leaders to strengthen Africa’s partnerships for health security and sovereignty.
I met successively with Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Peter Sands, Executive Director of the The Global Fund; Dr Hans Kluge, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe; and Dr Hanan Al Kuwari, Senior Advisor to the Emir of Qatar and former Minister of Public Health of Qatar.
Africa’s pursuit of health security and sovereignty means building strong African institutions and capacities that enable our continent to engage with the rest of the world through partnerships based on mutual respect, shared responsibility and common interests. I deeply value these relationships and the commitment of our partners to continue working with Africa CDC and our Member States.

Aujourd’hui, 24 août 2026, j’ai reçu dans mon bureau plusieurs éminents dirigeants de la santé mondiale afin de renforcer les partenariats de l’Afrique.
J’ai successivement rencontré Dr Sania Nishtar, CEO Gavi; Peter Sands, CEO Global Funds; Dr Hans Kluge, Directeur régional de l’OMS pour l’Europe ; et Dr Hanan Al Kuwari, Conseillère principale de l’Émir du Qatar et ancienne Ministre de la Santé publique du Qatar.
La sécurité et la souveraineté sanitaires en Afrique signifie bâtir des institutions africaines fortes et renforcer nos propres capacités, afin de collaborer avec le reste du monde à travers des partenariats fondés sur le respect mutuel, la responsabilité partagée et des intérêts communs. J’accorde une grande importance à ces relations ainsi qu’à l’engagement de nos partenaires à continuer de travailler aux côtés d’Africa CDC et de nos États membres.

Our battle against Ebola extends beyond the virus itself.

Today, African Ministers unite at Africa CDC HQ in Addis Ababa for the African High-Level Ministerial Committee (AHLMC), standing at a turning point for Africa’s .

The challenge before us is clear: How do we create a global health system that puts Africa at the centre of decision-making?

True preparedness means more than labs and emergency teams. It’s about listening to our communities, building trust, and making sure every voice is heard in the response.

Our fight is not just against the virus. It’s about building the trust and unity that make every response possible.

Nearly US$1 billion pledged. Around US$700 million already accounted for. Now the focus must be on delivery.

In my interview with RFI I spoke about the financing of the Ebola response in the DRC and the responsibility to know where resources are going and how they are reaching the response.

Partners have mobilised. The next step is strong national coordination, bringing together every organisation receiving funds and ensuring resources translate into action on the ground.

As I said: a government does not complain. A government acts.

Près d’un milliard de dollars promis. Environ 700 millions de dollars déjà comptabilisés. Maintenant, il faut assurer la mise en œuvre.

Dans mon entretien avec RFI, je suis revenu sur le financement de la riposte contre Ebola en RDC et sur la nécessité de savoir où vont les ressources et comment elles parviennent concrètement à la riposte.

Les partenaires se sont mobilisés. La prochaine étape exige une coordination nationale forte, réunissant toutes les organisations qui reçoivent des financements afin que ces ressources se traduisent en actions sur le terrain.

Comme je l’ai dit : un gouvernement ne se plaint pas. Un gouvernement agit.

100 days since the declaration of the Ebola outbreak, the priorities are clear.

Find every case. Follow every contact. Break every chain of transmission. Protect every frontline worker. Bring testing and treatment closer to communities. Turn every pledge into action.

Today, together with my brothers Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Dr Mohamed Yakub Janabi, World Health Organization (WHO) I write in Al Jazeera English about what it will take to stop this outbreak.

The response must now scale up, with communities at its centre and the full strength of African and international solidarity behind it.

This outbreak can be stopped. We must act at the scale the emergency demands.

100 jours après la déclaration du début de l’épidémie d’Ebola, les priorités sont claires.

Identifier chaque cas. Suivre chaque contact. Briser chaque chaîne de transmission. Protéger chaque intervenant en première ligne. Rapprocher le dépistage et les traitements des communautés. Transformer chaque engagement en action.

Aujourd’hui, avec mes frères Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus et Dr Mohamed Yakub Janabi, de l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé, je signe dans Al Jazeera English une tribune sur ce qu’il faudra pour mettre fin à cette épidémie.

La riposte doit désormais changer d’échelle, en plaçant les communautés au centre et en mobilisant toute la force de la solidarité africaine et internationale.

Cette épidémie peut être stoppée. Nous devons agir à la hauteur de l’urgence.

Il y a quelques semaines, lors d’un échange avec de jeunes leaders d’opinion congolais, Sharufa Amisi, JoBams, Realbenji4 and CÉLINE BANZA, je leur ai parlé d’une conviction qui guide notre action : la fierté d’être Africains et de répondre ensemble à un défi africain.

Cent jours après le début de cette épidémie d’Ebola, cette responsabilité est plus forte que jamais.

Nous devons aller plus vite, au plus près des communautés, protéger celles et ceux qui sont en première ligne et mobiliser toute la force du continent pour interrompre chaque chaîne de transmission.

L’Afrique répond. L’Afrique agit. Et nous devons aller jusqu’au bout.

A few weeks ago, during an conversation with young Congolese opinion leaders, Sharufa Amisi, JoBams, Benji4 and Céline Banza, I shared a conviction that continues to guide our response: the pride of being African and taking responsibility for an African challenge. One hundred days into this Ebola outbreak, that responsibility is greater than ever.

We must move faster, stay closer to communities, protect those on the front line and mobilise the full strength of our continent to break every chain of transmission.

Africa is responding. Africa is acting. We must see this through.

Africa can care for Africa.

During my meeting with the President of Namibia, I shared that I would undergo my medical check-up here. I believe in the health professionals and institutions we are working to strengthen across our continent.

I came to Windhoek with swelling in my leg and received specialist care from Dr Gerson Uanivi, a vascular surgeon at Roman Catholic Hospital. Trained in South Africa and practising in Namibia, he now treats patients from Namibia, Angola and across the region.

His journey reflects Africa’s capacity: African expertise, developed on the continent and serving its people.

I make a deliberate choice to undergo my medical checks in Africa. Our continent has highly skilled doctors and centres of excellence capable of delivering world-class care. We must invest in them, connect them and make their expertise accessible to every African.

My gratitude to the President of Namibia, the Minister of Health, Roman Catholic Hospital and Dr Uanivi for their leadership, care and warm welcome.

Africa’s talent is here. Africa’s expertise is here. Let us build the systems that allow every African to benefit from it.

Africa buys together. Africa grows stronger.

In Windhoek, I joined my brother Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and Namibia’s Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Esperance Luvindao, for the signing marking Namibia’s commitment to the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism.

Through APPM, African countries can combine their purchasing power, secure quality health products at better prices and create a stronger market for African manufacturers. Namibia is now among the first nine countries leading this continental shift.

My appreciation to Dr Mariatou Tala Jallow, Director of APPM, for driving this ambitious agenda forward.

This is how we build Africa’s health sovereignty: together, at scale and through action.

Honoured to have met H.E. Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, during my visit to Windhoek.

Namibia is showing growing leadership in health, backed by strong national investment, regional credibility and an ability to bring countries together. Our conversation focused on how Africa CDC can deepen this partnership and support Namibia to play an even stronger role in Southern Africa’s health security.

I shared our proposal to work with the Government on a roadmap to position Namibia as a regional public health hub for the 16 SADC Member States, with stronger capacity for workforce training, digital health, laboratories and genomic surveillance, cross-border coordination and emergency preparedness.

We also discussed Namibia’s national health priorities, stronger Namibian representation in continental and global health platforms.

Namibia has an important role to play in building an Africa Ready continent: able to detect threats early, respond rapidly, finance its health priorities and produce more of what Africa needs.

I look forward to turning this ambition into concrete action with President Nandi-Ndaitwah and her Government.

From Windhoek, we are advancing an ambitious agenda for Africa’s health sovereignty.

At the opening of the 5th Southern Africa Regional Ministerial Steering Committee, I called for action in three priority areas:
• Financing our own health priorities and protecting families from financial hardship
• Building African manufacturing capacity for vaccines, diagnostics and medicines
• Strengthening preparedness so every country can detect threats early and respond rapidly

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC reminds us that health security depends on vigilance, strong national systems and effective cooperation across borders.

I thank H.E. Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, for her leadership, and Ambassador Dr Kaire Mbuende, Director-General of Namibia’s National Planning Commission, who represented Her Excellency at the opening.
Our task in Windhoek is to agree on clear commitments, assign responsibility, mobilise resources and deliver results.
This is how we build an Africa that is ready to lead, ready to respond and ready to protect its people.

At the 5th ReSCO Meeting in Windhoek, there will be one shared vision — a healthier, outbreak-free Southern Africa.

Ministers from across the SADC region will gather in Windhoek not just to celebrate progress, but to confront challenges, accelerate regional integration, and strengthen health security for all.

Because in Africa, when we show up for each other, we move forward together
