📢 Why Early Pregnancy Ultrasound Matters?

An before 24 weeks of pregnancy is more than just seeing the baby. It is a vital part of quality antenatal care for it:
✅ Accurately determines the baby's gestational age and expected delivery date
✅ Detects twins or multiple pregnancies early
✅ Identifies major fetal abnormalities early for timely care and referral
✅ Helps prevent unnecessary interventions due to incorrect pregnancy dating
✅ Improves mothers' pregnancy experience through reassurance and informed care.
✅ Confirms pregnancy location (whether or not the expected baby is located within the uters)
✅ Confirms fetal viability (provides important information about well-being of the expected baby)
✅ Enables early assessment of fetal growth

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least one before 24 weeks of pregnancy to support healthier pregnancies and better outcomes for mothers and babies.

Notably, the MARCH Research Center Mekelle University and its partners through the Project are striving to make ultrasound scanning services to hard to reach areas.

Over the last couple of days, the Tigray team based in MARCH Research Center Mekelle University continued its outreach ultrasound scanning services at and Health Centers, bringing critical maternal health services closer to underserved communities.

At Agulae Health Center, #44 pregnant women received ultrasound scanning services, with #34 mothers accessing the service for the first time during their current pregnancy.

Similarly, at Edagahamus Health Center, #52 pregnant women were scanned, including #38 mothers who received their first-ever ultrasound examination during the current pregnancy.


✅ 96 pregnant women reached through outreach ultrasound services.
✅ 72 mothers received ultrasound scanning for the first time.

The high number of first-time ultrasound examinations highlights the persistent gaps in access to diagnostic maternal health services in many communities. By taking ultrasound services directly to health centers, the outreach program is helping women access timely pregnancy assessments that might otherwise be unavailable due to distance, cost, or limited service availability.

These efforts contribute to improved antenatal care, support informed clinical decision-making, and strengthen the early identification and management of potential pregnancy-related complications: ultimately improving health outcomes for both mothers and their babies.
More specifically, early ultrasound examinations help confirm pregnancy, accurately estimate gestational age, identify multiple pregnancies, detect potential complications, and guide timely antenatal care.

As part of the ongoing ultrasound outreach program led by the team in Tigray and based at MARCH, ultrasound screening services were provided at Adwa Health Center on 29 May 2026.

A total of 35 pregnant mothers received ultrasound scans, including 24 who underwent screening for the first time. Of those screened, 5 were in their first trimester, 16 in their second trimester, and 14 in their third trimester.

We extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Tewelde Teklu, a trained mid-level ultrasound provider from Adwa General Hospital, and the midwives of Adwa Health Center for their dedication and invaluable contribution to this effort.

Together, we remain committed to improving access to essential maternal health services and promoting safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for mothers and babies in Tigray.

: Strengthening Health Systems in Fragile Settings!

In the face of growing political and economic pressures affecting healthcare delivery in Tigrai, resilient systems and resilient professionals are becoming more important than ever.

On May 16, 2026, the MARCH Research Center Mekelle University team organized a Quality Improvement (QI) Evaluation Workshop for NICU and Labor & Delivery (LD) staff at Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.

The workshop brought together active NICU staff who were off duty, Quality Office leaders, NICU and LD focal persons, the SBFR Coordinator, LD leadership, QI focal staff, resuscitation corner representatives, and hospital management.

The session served as a platform to present ongoing QI projects and openly reflect on key challenges affecting maternal and newborn care services. With hospitals in Tigrai currently operating under severe economic and transportation constraints, many facilities including Ayder CSH, are functioning with significantly reduced staffing levels, affecting quality of care and staff wellbeing.

Against this backdrop, the workshop focused on improving efficiency, teamwork, communication, IPC practices, documentation, and supportive care using the limited available resources. Bringing NICU and LD teams together also enabled candid reflections with strong implications for accountability and collaboration.

Participants further engaged in a solution-oriented discussion in the presence of Vice Chief Clinical Director Dr. Dirar Medhanie and other concerned unit heads. The discussion emphasized scaling up best practices, identifying and mitigating persistent gaps, and addressing critical concerns such as access to critical inputs for IPC practice and the like.

Even amid immense challenges, healthcare workers continue to demonstrate resilience, commitment, and hope in sustaining lifesaving care for mothers and newborns.

Proud moment for the digital health team!

As the National Data Lead of the SLL360/NEST360 Consortium in Ethiopia, we were honored to showcase our innovative data and digital health interventions during the National Data and Digital Health Week 2026, organized by the Ministry of Health Ethiopia from May 11–15, 2026.

Held at Hilton Addis Ababa and Elilly International Hotel, the national event brought together organizations and innovators working to strengthen Ethiopia’s health data and digital health ecosystem.

At our exhibition booth, the SLL360 national team presented the Integrated Maternal and Neonatal Inpatient Data System (IMNID): a transformative digital health initiative designed to improve data quality, interoperability, and evidence-based neonatal and maternal care across Ethiopia.
Highlights of our presentation included:
🔹The vision and objectives of the IMNID system
🔹 Expansion of IMNID across 226 health facilities
🔹 Digital workflows and real-time inpatient data systems
🔹EMR–DHIS2 Tracker interoperability solutions
🔹Python-based interoperability application enabling seamless data synchronization
🔹 Data quality monitoring dashboards
🔹Capacity building and DHIS2 Tracker training for healthcare providers
🔹National scale-up and sustainability efforts to strengthen the continuum of care

We also demonstrated how the system supports reducing neonatal mortality and improving healthcare quality through stronger digital integration and health information systems.

The opening session was graced by the participation of H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, Minister of Health of Ethiopia, and Dr. Fana Hagos, President of Mekelle University. Their presence highlighted the growing national commitment toward digital transformation in healthcare.

We, as the /NEST360 Consortium in Ethiopia, remain committed to advancing data-driven healthcare solutions that save little lives and strengthen health systems in Ethiopia.

A team of five pediatricians from MARCH Research Center, Mekelle University participated in the held from May 12–14, 2026, in Addis Ababa.

Hosted at Embilta Hotel and St. Paul Hospital, the workshop brought together participants from Ethiopia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, under the ACS-IR implementation research initiative, to strengthen mentorship skills in neonatal care.

The practical mentorship focused on safe antenatal corticosteroid (ACS) use, small and sick newborn care (SSNC), respiratory support, kangaroo mother care, infection prevention, developmental support, and quality improvement approaches. Through simulations, role plays, bedside scenarios, and group rotations, participants gained hands-on experience in both clinical mentorship and supportive newborn care.

Reflecting on the training, Dr. Atsede Gebrekidan highlighted the value of the small-group mentorship model and practical case-based learning, while Dr. Genet Beletse emphasized the program’s sustainability approach: preparing local champions to continue mentorship and improve neonatal outcomes within their facilities. Dr. Kiros Weldegerima also underscored the importance of phased onsite mentorship, supportive supervision, and facility ownership for long-term impact.

Dr. Hailemariam Gebrearegay reflected that “the hands-on simulations, role plays, and shared experiences from different countries provided practical insights that can transform everyday newborn care practices and improve outcomes for small and sick newborns.”

The workshop reaffirmed that practical, collaborative mentorship models can strengthen neonatal care systems and contribute significantly to reducing newborn mortality in resource-limited settings.
