I wanted to share a little bit of sunshine from our journey navigating mild autism. We had our first appointment with our daughter’s psychologist a couple of weeks ago. I was worried when the doctor told me to step outside. But when called in (after what seemed like eternity lol) I was surprised to hear how it went.
Sometimes, as a parent, you go into these sessions holding your breath, wondering if it will be a "tough" day or if she’ll feel overwhelmed by the social demands of talking about her feelings. But she did well. Was able to openly talk about her feelings and expressed herself through her doodles/sketches.
Here are some reasons why I feel this session was a success.
The Connection: She felt safe enough to share her own perspective on school, friendships and family without me needing to "talk" on her behalf.
The Tools: They worked on some brilliant, tangible strategies for managing sensory overwhelm that she actually seemed excited to try.
The Confidence: She walked out of that office standing a little taller, looking like she truly felt heard and understood.
