Why Motivation Often Follows Action
One of the biggest myths about low mood is that we need to feel motivated before we can start doing things.
In reality, it’s often the other way around.
When we’re struggling, our mind can tell us:
“Stay in bed.”
“Don’t bother.”
“You won’t enjoy it anyway.”
But the more we withdraw from the things that usually bring us a sense of achievement, connection, or pleasure, the harder it can become to lift our mood.
Even the smallest actions can help begin to break this cycle.
You don’t have to feel ready. You don’t have to feel motivated first. Often, motivation comes after we take that first small step.
Progress doesn’t have to be huge — it just has to begin.
If low mood is making everyday life feel difficult, CBT with Gemini Counselling can help you understand what’s keeping the cycle going and support you in taking manageable steps towards feeling more like yourself again.
