Most of us learnt how to cope, but not many learnt how to feel.
We all learnt how to distract, stay busy. How to understand emotions instead of letting ourselves experience them and flow through them.
So when big feelings show up, the body reads them as unsafe. Too much. Something to shut down or get rid of.
That’s often why insight alone doesn’t really bring relief. You can know why you feel the way you do and still feel overwhelmed.
But do you know how empowering it feels to allow an emotion to exist fully without judging it, analysing it, or pushing it away?
I didn’t, to be honest. And when I first tried it, everything started genuinely shifting.
I offered myself curiosity and compassion, instead of judgement. I started telling myself that the way I am feeling is valid and is ok. And that I don’t need to change anything.
Strangely enough, that’s when my body and emotions started letting go. As soon as I realised I was allowed to be me, my sadness and anger soften.
Emotions finally started to feel manageable again. I finally felt empowered instead of overwhelmed.
And that’s why this is one of the very first “tools” I teach to the people I work with.
At first, it will feel uncomfortable and kind of.. scary.
Especially if, like me, you grew up needing to stay regulated for others, or learnt that big feelings weren’t welcome.
But eventually, the body learns that feelings rise… and fall.
And that you can feel stuff deeply and still be okay.
This is how emotional capacity grows.
Not by avoiding or “mastering” emotions,
but by meeting them with presence, curiosity, and compassion.
And if this feels hard, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.
It means you’re learning something you were never taught🦋💫
