Dear Mom and Dad, It's me, your immature teenager. I know you think I am annoying.
I need your support as I navigate through my teenage years. My brain is still developing, you know. Particularly the prefrontal cortex, which is crucial for rational thinking. I am still lackin it.
This development won't be complete until I'm about 25, and that feels like a long way off.
I am lost. I am sorry. It seems like I don't develop as fast as you want me to.
While I might excel academically, like scoring high on my math exams, that doesn't shield me from the typical developmental stages. Intelligence and judgment are distinct, and the same traits that make my brain creative and adaptable also make me more impulsive at times. I know, but I can't control it! I know that deep down you get it. Don't you Mum/Dad?
When I make a mistake or miss an opportunity, your reaction can often feel overwhelming.
You, as adults, respond with the rational part of your brain, but I tend to react more emotionally. When you ask, "What were you thinking?" understand that my thought process is different from yours. You can attribute this to my stage in life or to nature, but it’s simply the reality right now. I can’t make it change. It's above me abilities.
I know you love me, but currently, my friends are my priority. They get me. Please understand this phase and remember, I am observing you closely. And I feel you.
Here's how you can help me
Your actions and words matter, even if it seems like I'm not listening. Show me the path, and I will eventually follow, despite any detours. I will.
Allow me to learn from my mistakes. Giving me some freedom helps build my confidence and resilience. Don't get mad with me.
Tell me about your teenage years and what you learned. It gives me space to make my own discoveries. So I don't feel like an alien.
Help me see the bigger picture. Remind me that current challenges will pass, even if I seem dismissive.
Emphasize the dangers of drugs and driving. Assure me that I can always reach out for help without judgment. Please.
Your kindness teaches me to be kind. Avoid mocking or being harsh, and understand that I might think I know everything right now. Just be there for me.
Show interest in what I enjoy. Your validation means a lot and strengthens our connection.
You can still hug me. Or at least try. Sometimes it's enough to look in my eyes and give me that warm smile. I need it.
One day, this phase will end I can promise and you'll see a confident, strong, and kind adult emerge. Until then, please be patient and supportive. Like you would want someone to be to you.
Love,
Your Teenager
