When Justin Fashanu joined Nottingham Forest from Norwich in 1981, he arrived as one of the biggest signings in English football.

A year earlier, he had scored that famous volley against Liverpool, and Forest paid almost £1 million to bring him to the City Ground.

But the move never really worked out.

Fashanu struggled to fit into Forest’s style, the goals did not come, and after only a few games he found himself out of the team.

So he went to see Clough.

“Gaffer, why am I not in the team?”

Clough did not spend too long explaining it.

“Son, you can’t get hold of it.”

“You can’t pass it.”

“You can’t score me a f****** goal.”

“You wear your socks halfway around your shin pads and it looks s***.”

Norwich had been in touch with Clough and wanted to take him back.

“I suggest you think about it.”

Fashanu left and spent the next couple of days considering what Clough had told him.

And when he returned to the office, he had made his decision.

“Gaffer, I’ve been thinking about what you said.”

“I’ve had a word with God.”

“And God thinks that I should stay here and fight for my place.”

Clough listened to him.

“Unfortunately, son, there’s only one God in Nottingham.”

“And he thinks you should f*** off back to Norwich.”
