𝗦𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗶𝗰 𝗞𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘀…

Also known as ‘brown warts’

They occur in males and females of all races, typically beginning to erupt in the 30s or 40s. They are uncommon under the age of 20 years.

They are not typically caused by viruses but are felt to be degenerative in nature appearing as we age. They can be confused with more sinister skin lesions such as melanoma. They are benign though and not pre malignant.

Diagnosis is usually straightforward with typical features seen on dermoscope. These include brown clods ( aggregates of keratin ), white clods or milia like cysts. Multiple openings with fissures and ridges. To the naked eye they can vary from pale brown to very dark in colour. They often have a stuck on appearance. On the face they can be difficult to differentiate from lentigo maligna.

Typical treatments include cryotherapy ( freezing), shave excision or curettage or electrocautery. If there is doubt about the diagnosis onward referral may be required.

This lesion was treated successfully with two short sessions of cryotherapy and the patient was very pleased to have her forehead back!

As we age a variety of ‘joys’ conspire against maintenance of youthful anatomy.

Boney resorption starts in our 30s. This particularly affects the mandible (jaw). Alongside atrophy and downward migration of mid-face fat pads, commonly in our 40’s and 50s, jowls can develop disrupting the clean contour of the jaw line.

Careful placement of dermal filler can support the jawline and chin providing a more defined profile and face shape.
