💭 Therapy Myth Monday

"Healing means forgetting what happened."

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about therapy.

The goal of healing isn't to erase your memories or pretend painful experiences never happened.

It's about reaching a place where those memories no longer overwhelm you, define who you are or control your life.

Your experiences will always be part of your story, but they don't have to dictate your future.

Therapy helps you process what happened with compassion, make sense of your experiences, and build a life where the past no longer feels like it's happening in the present.

✨ Healing isn't forgetting. It's remembering without being overwhelmed.

Many people wait until they’re completely overwhelmed before reaching out for therapy.

The truth?

Therapy isn’t only for crisis.

Sometimes it’s simply a space to understand yourself better, process life experiences and learn healthier ways of coping.

You don’t have to carry everything alone.

💚 Understanding yourself is one of the greatest acts of self-care.

💭 What is your inner critic?

We all have an inner voice that comments on our thoughts, actions and experiences. Sometimes that voice is kind and encouraging, but for many people it becomes an inner critic – the part of us that says "I'm not good enough," "I'll never get it right," or "Everyone else is better than me." 💔

Our inner critic often develops through life experiences such as criticism, bullying, difficult relationships or past trauma. Although it may have originally formed as a way to protect us from rejection or failure, over time it can affect our confidence, self-esteem and emotional wellbeing. 🌱

In therapy, we don't try to silence the inner critic overnight. Instead, we learn to understand where it came from, recognise when it's taking over, and gently challenge the unhelpful beliefs it holds. 🧠💚 As we develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion, we can begin to replace self-criticism with a kinder, more balanced way of speaking to ourselves.

What has your inner critic said to you today???

✨ Remember: You are so much more than your inner critic, and you don't have to believe everything it tells you.

What is self-esteem, and why does it matter?

Self-esteem is the way we see and value ourselves. It influences how we think, feel and respond to life's challenges, relationships and opportunities.

Healthy self-esteem doesn't mean believing we're perfect – it means recognising that we are worthy of kindness, respect and care, even when we make mistakes.

Our self-esteem is shaped by many life experiences, including childhood, relationships, successes, setbacks and the messages we receive from others. When self-esteem is low, it can affect our confidence, decision-making and emotional wellbeing.

The good news is that self-esteem is not fixed at where you are with it today. With support, self-compassion and the right tools, it can grow, helping us build healthier relationships, cope better with challenges and live a more fulfilling life.

Many people worry they'll be expected to share everything immediately.
That's not how therapy works.

Your first session is about:

• Getting to know you

• Understanding what has brought you to therapy

• Exploring what you hope to achieve

• Answering any questions you have

You decide what you're comfortable sharing.
There's no pressure.
