☀️ Hot Weather & Dementia: Keeping Our Loved Ones Safe ☀️
As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that hot weather can have a bigger impact on people living with dementia.
People with dementia may not always recognise when they are feeling too hot, remember to drink enough fluids, or communicate that they are uncomfortable. This can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and urinary tract infections (UTIs).
A UTI can sometimes cause a sudden change in someone living with dementia, including:
⚠️ Increased confusion or sudden worsening of symptoms
⚠️ Changes in behaviour or increased agitation
⚠️ Increased tiredness or withdrawal
⚠️ Changes in continence or needing the toilet more often
There are simple steps we can all take to help:
💧 Encourage regular drinks throughout the day
🌡️ Keep rooms cool and well ventilated
👒 Encourage light clothing and staying out of direct sunlight
🍉 Offer foods with a high water content, such as fruit
👀 Keep an eye out for changes in mood, behaviour, or wellbeing
Please take extra care of those who may need a little more support during this hot weather. A small reminder to drink, rest, and stay cool can make a big difference.
