I recently completed research on the history of the ADAIR family who were so instrumental in shaping Ballymena and the surrounding area. The research commissioned by The Braid Museum will form the basis of new displays in museum to mark the 400th anniversary of the granting of the charter to the ADAIR family who came from Wigtownshire, Scotland. A range of events are planned to mark this anniversary and I'm delighted to have been asked to deliver a talk on the ADAIR'S exploits in Ireland. I'll be joined by Gaby Reynolds from Stranraer who will talk about the ADAIR'S time in Scotland. The talk is on Thursday 07 May in the Studio Theatre, The Braid Arts Centre, Ballymena. It starts at 7.15pm with a reception, followed by the talks at 8.00pm. It is free to attend but booking is required - please use email [email protected] to book a place.

My next talk is on the subject of the Irish Workhouse and Finding Your Poor Irish Ancestors. It is for the Belfast Branch of the North of Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) and will be delivered via Zoom on Tuesday 28 April at 7.15pm BST. During the talk we will look at the provison for the poor and the different schemes such as indoor relief, outdoor relief and employment schemes. We will include emigration schemes provided by the workhouse and local landlords as well as the Earl Grey Orphan Immigration Scheme. The brutal conditions in the workhouse will be discussed and we will examine how and where we can find more information about our ancestors who may have worked there or been admitted as an inmate or for medical treatment.
