Mobility and strength go hand in hand.

Horse riders tend to develop predictable patterns of tightness because of the time spent in the saddle, asymmetrical loading, and repetitive movement.

In this post series, we will look at some of the most common muscles and areas that experience tightness.

Part 1: Lower Body

Hip flexors (Iliopsoas & Re**us Femoris)
Often tight from prolonged hip flexion in the saddle.
Can contribute to an anterior pelvic tilt and difficulty maintaining a deep, balanced seat.

Adductors (Inner Thighs)
Frequently overactive from gripping with the legs.
Tightness can reduce hip mobility and make the leg less independent.

Hamstrings
Can become shortened, particularly in riders who spend long periods sitting.
May limit pelvic movement and affect the ability to follow the horse's motion.

Gluteal Muscles (particularly Piriformis and Glute Medius)
Glute medius is often weak or inhibited rather than tight.
Piriformis can become tight as it compensates for poor hip stability.

Calves (Gastrocnemius & Soleus)
Tight calves can limit ankle flexibility, making it harder to maintain a supple heel.

It's so important that, as horse-riders, we work on both our mobility and strength to be as balanced as possible on our horses!
