The Primary Care Respiratory Society have published their position statement about the loss of respiratory leadership and expertise.

This is fantastic, shining a spotlight on respiratory!

What's difficult to read is the lack of representation of Physiotherapy. The lack of understanding about Breathing Pattern Disorders and the pivitoal role physio play in assessing, diagnosing and treating this complex condition.

This highlights how poorly understood this condition is and how physiotherapy can help make a difference to patients. Breathing pattern disorder is not just seen in lung conditions and breathlessness. It shows up in pain, fatigue, anxiety, lung condition, poor sleep and athletic performance.

More work needed to get the word out!

Never has a post been more timely than when I'm next to two snotty children - hello Hayfever my old friend!

The nose is the gateway to the lungs:
▫️ It warms the air so that when it reaches the lungs it is nearly body temperature.
▫️ It humidifies the air making it more moist and therefore supportive of lung tissue which needs moister.
▫️ It cleaners and filters, nostril hair and further back cillia help to pick up foreign bodies as they are breathed in.
▫️ It helps produce nitrous oxide, a natural dilator of the lungs and helps blood vessels swell to deliver more blood, in turn picking up more oxygen.

I recommend sinus rinse, NOT an AD, I just like it and find it very easy to deliver a good consistent flow.

Nasal rinsing. You keep your teeth clean so why not do the same with your nose?

Never had a post felt more timely as I'm sat here writing this as I sit next to two snuffling children, thank you Hayfever! In this clip I have used the (not an Ad, I just like it and therefore recommend it)

Remember nasal breathing is important for:
▫️ Cleaning and filtering air before it reaches the lungs
▫️ Humidifying the air
▫️ Warming the air so that it's near body temperature by the time it reaches the lungs reducing hypersensitivity in the throat and lungs
▫️ Producing low level nitrous oxide to help open airways and expand blood vessels to improve oxygen take up.

A little bit of science for a Sunday and yes I'm going to wash some little noses!

Nasal rinsing, it's great, try it, and if it's not for you, that's cool too.

Rib flare isnt just posture - it's breathing, it's stability, it's movement mechanics.

Earlier this week posted about her journey, discovering rib flare and the impact it has on her training and over all comfort.

Pregnancy, overhead workouts/work, poor posture, spinal changes or mal alignment, muscular imbalance or weakness all contribute. In fact the list is endless.

It affects men and women and getting the right assessment and diagnosis is critical.

Shining light on this very overlooked element is so important. It's a huge puzzle piece in the performance of the human body and a game changer if treated correctly.

▫️ Respiratory physio isn't just one thing, it's not just the lungs. It's the nose. The throat. The ribs. The diaphragm. The front posture muscles. The back posture muscles. The pelvic floor.

▫️ I love that I get to use all my training from Buteyko, BradCliff Method, Oxygen Advantage and APPI Pilates to bring it all together. To deliver a well rounded package for clients. To connect the dots. Fit the puzzle pieces.

▫️ We are not separate components we are ONE WHOLE and when one part isn't performing then the domino effect can happen.

Breathlessness in sport is more complex than most people realise. Every sport places unique demands on the bosy and those demands shape how you breathe.

Your breathing could be the missing link between where you are now and your full potential.

Let's uncover the connection between your sport, your breathing pattern and performance.

Whether it's surfing, Hyrox, climbing, cycling or running, each disapline challenges the body differently and that affects how you breathe and how effectively you use your breath.

Breathing is one of the few autonomic functions you can consciously control.

It is a direct pathway to influence the nervous system.

Slow, controlled breaths out increase 'rest and digest' - your parasymathetic pathway.

Fast shallow breaths are simulators exciting the 'flight and freeze' sympathetic pathway.

Pacing your breathing regularly lowers physiological stress and improves emotional regulation.

Breathing control is not a fad, it's a science. Daily practice is key, it's a key habit to build into your day to improve resilience and calm.
