👟 School holidays are the perfect time to check your child's feet.
Kids' feet grow fast, often faster than we realise, so it's easy for shoes to become too tight without anyone noticing.
While you've got a bit more time over the holidays, it's worth checking their feet for common conditions like verrucas and ingrown nails, and making sure their current shoes still fit properly.
If you're shopping for new school shoes, here's what to look out for:
Fit and fastening
✅ Shoes should have a secure fastening, such as laces, velcro or buckles, to keep the foot in place and prevent slipping. Make sure they fit snugly at the heel without pinching or leaving gaps.
Flexible and supportive soles
✅ Look for flexible soles that let the foot move naturally, while still being firm enough to provide stability. Avoid overly stiff soles, as these can restrict natural foot movement.
Breathable materials
✅ Choose shoes made from breathable materials like leather or mesh, which help prevent sweating and irritation. Avoid synthetic and flimsy materials that trap heat and moisture and increase the risk of fungal infections.
Toe space
✅ Make sure the toe box is roomy enough for toes to move freely without being cramped. Avoid pointed or narrow-toed shoes, which can contribute to problems like bunions or ingrown toenails.
