The Prequel: The 2-Year Battle Before the UK Even Said "Yes" 🇬🇧✈️

​Before I ever failed the NMC OSCE twice in 2017, I had to survive a brutal two-year obstacle course just to get my visa.

​It all started in 2015. An NHS Trust flew to the Philippines, interviewed me, and I was selected! I was on cloud nine. But that joy was short-lived. To actually move forward, I needed to pass the IELTS.
​It took me 4 attempts and an entire year just to get the scores I needed. Here is what that year actually looked like:

​The Brutal Commute: I took a new hospital job for better pay and leadership hopes, but it meant traveling 2–3 hours from San Jose del Monte, Bulacan to my review center in Makati after every shift. I’d travel another 1–2 hours back, getting home at 1:00 AM dead tired. I did this for 6 months until I couldn't take it anymore.

​The Sacrifice: After failing twice, I resigned from my job to focus entirely on studying. To survive, I worked as a part-time private duty nurse just to afford my food and travel costs, and switched to a review center closer to home.

​The Breakthrough: Failed attempt #3 crushed me because I knew I had improved. But on the 4th try, I finally conquered it.

​After that, came the CBT exam. Thankfully, I passed that theory test in one sitting!
​The Reality Check: From being selected in that interview to finally getting my visa, it took two long years of pure grit, sweat, and tears. And little did I know, an even bigger storm was waiting for me in the UK (which you read about in my last post!)

From Failing My OSCE Twice to Living My UK Dream: A Journey of Faith and Resilience 🇵🇭🇬🇧

​Looking at this picture of me in my Philippine nurse’s uniform at the OSCE centre brings back a flood of emotions. It reminds me of the toughest chapter of my UK journey—one that I don’t talk about often, but felt compelled to share today.

I arrived in the UK back in May 2017, full of hope, to work in one of the Hospitals in Surrey. Because I hadn’t passed the NMC’s Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) yet, I started as an Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) working as a Band 3 Assistant/Associate Practitioner. It was supposed to be a temporary stepping stone.
But back then, the rules were strict: you only got two attempts to pass. ​And unfortunately...I failed both. 💔

​When that second result came in, my world shattered. My NMC online application automatically shuts down. I had to start the entire process over from absolute scratch. The stress, anxiety, and self-doubt were overwhelming. I felt like I had failed not just myself, but my future.

​I had to lean heavily on my support system. I was asking kindly my brother and friends back home in the Philippines to help me gather, sort, and resend all my documents to the UK. I was so exhausted and worried that I even started an identical application for the Republic of Ireland just as a backup plan.
​But giving up wasn’t an option.

​Fast forward to today: I didn't just get that NMC pin.
I built a life here. I am now blessed with a beautiful family, my loving wife and my two amazing boys.

​If you are struggling right now—whether you are waiting for OSCE results, dealing with visa stress, or feeling overwhelmed by the IEN journey—please hang in there. Looking back, I realize that adversity didn't break me. It built my resilience. With hard work, a stubborn refusal to quit, and strong faith in God, you will survive your storm. Your breakthrough is coming!
