Retirement is strange. For 31 years my opinions belonged to my employer, my regulator, and my professional indemnity insurer. Last spring I handed back the keys, and my opinions became mine again.

So here is the first one, offered freely: "we'll keep an eye on it" is the most expensive sentence in British dentistry. Not for the dentist. For the woman in the chair.

My granddaughter asked me what I miss about the surgery. The patients, truthfully. Forty of them still send Christmas cards.

What I don't miss: watching the same careful, diligent women get measurably worse every six months, with nothing on the official menu to offer them but patience and a leaflet about floss.

You spend a career inside a system, you learn exactly where its walls are. From out here, I intend to describe them.
