YOU’VE HEARD OF ADHD… BUT HAVE YOU HEARD OF EOTAS? 🏫 🧠 👇🏼

For years, I’ve stood on stages sharing my story. At the end of almost every talk of You, Me & ADHD, someone asks me the same question…

“What’s EOTAS?”

Every single time, it stops me in my tracks and it breaks my heart.

Because the truth is…

EOTAS didn’t just change my education. It saved my life.

At 15, I was permanently excluded from school.

I wasn’t a bad kid.

I wasn’t lazy.

I wasn’t stupid.

I knew right from wrong morally, but untentionally wherever I went chaso, misunderstanding and trouble would manifest and unfold.

I was a young person with undiagnosed ADHD and other neurodivergent differences whose needs simply weren’t understood or met in mainstream education at the time.

Like thousands of children across the UK today, people saw my behaviour before they saw the reason behind it.

School at the time wasn’t the right environment for me.

Then someone gave me something every child deserves.

A second chance.

That second chance was Education Otherwise Than At School (EOTAS).

For the first time, I wasn’t treated like a problem to be fixed.

I was treated like a person.

People listened.

They understood how my brain worked.

They adapted the education around me instead of expecting me to fit into a system that wasn’t meeting my needs.

Relationships came before results.

Trust came before targets.

Understanding came before judgement.

And something incredible happened…

I thrived.

But EOTAS didn’t just teach me English, Maths and Science.

It taught me how to live.

I learnt to cook.

I learnt to clean and look after myself.

I learnt about money, budgeting and finances.

I developed communication skills.

I learnt about mental health, emotional regulation and resilience.

I gained confidence.

I learnt practical vocational skills.

I discovered my strengths through enrichment, sport and creative opportunities.

I learnt independence.

These weren’t “extra” lessons.

They were life lessons.

The kind that prepared me for adulthood.

The kind that gave me hope.

The kind that gave me a future.

Today, I’m proud to travel the world as a presenter, motivational speaker, DJ, skateboard coach and founder of You, Me & ADHD, speaking to schools, colleges, organisations and conferences about neurodiversity and inclusion.

None of that would have happened if someone hadn’t believed I deserved another chance.

That’s why it breaks my heart that so many families have never even heard of EOTAS.

Because if nobody tells you it exists…

How can you ever know it’s an option?

So, what is EOTAS?
Education Otherwise Than At School (EOTAS) is education arranged for children and young people who cannot receive a suitable education in school because of their individual circumstances.

It isn’t a shortcut.

It isn’t “giving up” on education.

It isn’t lowering expectations.

It’s about providing the right education in the right environment for the individual child.

Under Section 19 of the Education Act 1996, local authorities have a legal duty to arrange suitable education for children who cannot attend school because of illness, exclusion or other reasons. In some cases, where it is necessary to meet a child’s needs, education may be delivered through EOTAS.

Why does this matter now more than ever?
We’re seeing more children identified as neurodivergent.

More children experiencing anxiety.

More exclusions.

More emotionally based school avoidance.

More families waiting months, and sometimes years, for support.

Schools are working incredibly hard under enormous pressure.

Teachers are doing everything they can.

But one education model cannot meet the needs of every child.

That’s not a criticism.

It’s reality.

For many neurodivergent children, learning looks different.

Some learn best through movement.

Some through practical experiences.

Some need quieter environments.

Some need smaller groups.

Some need flexibility.

Some need therapeutic support alongside education.

Some need EOTAS.

That’s why education should never be about forcing every child into one pathway.

It should be about finding the pathway where each child can flourish.

The problem is…
Most parents don’t discover EOTAS because someone tells them.

They discover it by accident.

Through another parent.

A support group.

A charity.

SENDIASS.

A solicitor.

Or after years of fighting for answers.

That isn’t good enough.

Families deserve to know every educational option available to them before reaching crisis point.

Awareness shouldn’t depend on luck.

If you’re a parent…
Learn about your child’s educational rights.

Speak to your local authority’s SEND team.

Contact your local SENDIASS service for free, impartial advice.

If your child has, or may need, an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), ask what educational provision is available to meet their individual needs.

Ask questions.

Seek independent advice if needed.

Most importantly…

Never let anyone make you feel guilty for finding the environment where your child can succeed.

This isn’t about mainstream versus EOTAS.
Mainstream education changes millions of lives.

Alternative Provision changes lives.

Special schools change lives.

EOTAS changes lives.

Every child is different.

Every pathway has value.

True inclusion isn’t making every child fit into the same classroom.

True inclusion is making sure every child has access to an education where they feel safe, understood, respected and able to reach their potential consistently and fairly and having support and help that is both accessible and fair.

I can’t change what happened to 15-year-old me.

But maybe this post can help and prevent another young person find the support they need before they lose hope.

Because no child should ever believe they’re broken simply because school wasn’t the right environment for them.

Sometimes changing the environment doesn’t just change education.

It changes a life.

EOTAS changed mine.

If you knew what EOTAS was before today, let me know in the comments.

If you didn’t…

Please share this post far and wide.
Tag someone who maybe doesnt't know about this option but needs it.

One share could help a parent discover an option they never knew existed.

One share could stop a child reaching crisis.

One share could change a life.

Let’s make EOTAS as well known as SEND, EHCPs and Alternative Provision. Every family deserves to know every option available to their child.

❤️ Because every child deserves the chance not just to survive education… but to thrive in it.

We all see life through our own lens. People may create versions of us that fit their own narrative, and that’s beyond our control. All we can do is stay true to who we are.

Watching the sunset isn’t just a vibe—it actually hacks your biology! Here is why you should step away from the screens and catch tonight's golden hour: Fixes your sleep: Evening light signals your body to release melatonin for a deeper, more restorative night's rest. Crushes stress: Looking at a sunset lowers cortisol levels and triggers an instant wave of mental calm. Boosts mood: The "awe" effect sparks natural dopamine to help fight daily burnout and anxiety. Aids digestion: It is the perfect cue for a short, post-dinner walk to beat bloating and boost heart health. Ditch the blue light, step outside, and let your body naturally unwind. 🧡 🌅
