🌦🌦 A LITTLE BACKGROUND 🌦🌦

I don't talk all that much about my previous career - I'm no longer a clinician and I hold that boundary with care, and people can be quick to assume I want to be a midwife (I don't).

But I'm realising maybe i should talk about it more, because outside of the clinical skills I've left behind there is so much value that I bring from that career into this one.

Not least holding your hand as you walk the less trodden path towards a birth & postpartum that looks a little different to the norm.

Pop on your critical thinking hat before you consume any of the mainstream media reporting of the latest maternity investigations.

There's always an agenda to push, a way to spin the scandal and turn it back on those who've been harmed.

🫂🫂 HARD CONVOS 🫂🫂

[🤪 take a sip every time i say "perhaps". Even if its gaviscon 😉]

These are not easy topics to discuss.

We're all carrying baggage that can be easily triggered by online content. Often content that is designed precisely to poke that baggage.

It doesn't have to be that way, and I'm trying to show how these conversations don't need to be polarising and invalidating, they can create space for different people with different experiences.

And when we can do that we can tackle the topics that are so blummin important to cover *before* your labour begins, where you have the time and headspace to explore them properly.

I'm pretty good at holding space for these conversations, because I'm not here trying to get you to agree with me. I'm here to enable you to explore your own circumstances, values and needs.

Because that is what I do - support parents unconditionally.
And who doesn't need that kind of support? 🤷🏻‍♀️🫶

🌊🌊 A ROUGH WEEK 🌊🌊

Some days this work is glorious, and some days its painfully hard. Much like motherhood.

Some days I do great work, and sometimes I let people down. Holding myself accountable to higher standards is not about these words, its about the action behind them, which has already begun.

⚡️⚡️ BEWARE!⚡️⚡️

Are you leaning heavily on consensus?
Or are you tuning into your senses..?

The 'validate me' response is EVERYWHERE, once you see it you won't unsee it.

I'm not saying others' experiences don't matter, but they're not what should be guiding your whole approach to decision making.

If you want to move forwards knowing you made the right decisions for YOU, your senses is where that wisdom lies.

➡️ NO MORE CAVEATS ⬅️

I get it, that need to pre-empt the judgement, to make sure you're not misunderstood.

But it doesn't get us anywhere.

We need to own it - own the big, messy feelings. Own the big, bold plan where everything goes exactly as you're dreaming!

We're not reckless, we're not unrealistic, and what we're saying matters.

And if we want to be properly understood we gotta stop diluting our pov.

Its a lot harder than it sounds!

Ok, hear me out.

This is how birth support (hell, ALL support!) should feel.

🌳 Autonomy to decide the approach you want to take.
🌳 Credit that you are capable of making that decision.
🌳 Trust to explore what feels ok for you, and to follow that pathway.
🌳 Unconditional support there if you decide you need it.
🌳 Zero judgement if you do decide to reach out for assistance.
🌳 Understanding that you really do have your own best interests at heart.
🌳 Wild celebration of your achievements.

This ⬆️ is my approach - to parenting AND to birth support.

🙈🙈 DON'T BE LIKE ME 🙈🙈

My god, if I could go back in time, the things I would do differently.

I don't really talk in detail about my birth experiences, not because I don't want to, but because thats my story not yours.

But lets just say the first one went as you'd expect when my birth prep was 80% the OBEM back catalogue...

And I think its no coincidence that this propaganda machine is being brought back, just as the noise about maternity care failings, the birth trauma epidemic, institutionalised racism and obstetric violence is gaining traction, waking up scores of expectant parents 👀

So here's my little nudge...

➡️➡️ don't be sucked in. Stay awake, and invest in top quality birth prep. You won't regret it.
