We are so pleased to hear that Milton Keynes is in the final four for UK City of Culture 2029!

Alongside Sheffield, Blackpool and Wrexham, MK is competing for £10 million to deliver a year-long cultural programme, with the winner due to be announced by January 2027.

Forget concrete cows and roundabouts (though we do love them) - this is wonderful news for the city and the new opportunities it could bring across business, creativity, technology and community life.

Celebrations like this are a lovely reminder of how culture can bring people together. That sense of connection is also at the heart of what we do at Good Life Sorted, with trusted local Helpers providing companionship and practical support at home.

Meet John Brenchley from Broadshield Solutions

When it comes to protecting the future of a loved one with additional needs, getting the right advice can make all the difference. That’s why Good Life Sorted BLMK are delighted to introduce John Brenchley, Principal of Broadshield Solutions, a specialist Independent Financial Advice practice based just down the road in Olney, supporting families across Milton Keynes, Bedford, and nationwide.

John did not take a standard route into financial planning. For over 20 years, he worked as a senior commercial director managing multi-million-pound corporate budgets and risk. But when his son received an autism diagnosis, his world shifted entirely.

When John looked for professional financial advice to secure his son's long-term future, he found that traditional high-street advisers drew a complete blank. Standard financial plans are built for standard, straight-line lives: build a pension, retire, and pass on whatever is left. They had no answers for the heavy 3 am questions facing special needs parents:

How do we fund therapies today without draining our future?
How do we protect our family when we get older or need care ourselves?
How do we ensure our child has a permanent, secure financial safety net long after we are no longer around?

Realising that standard roadmaps fail non-standard lives, John stepped away from his corporate career, retrained, and built the firm he could not find.
Today, Broadshield Solutions brings boardroom-level rigour to family kitchen tables. John helps local business owners and families with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) untangle complex trusts, coordinate specialist Wills, and build secure, multi-generational plans. (In fact, Broadshield is currently the only financial advice firm listed on the National Autistic Society directory!).

Independence isn't just about living at home. It's also about getting where you want to go. 🚘

Whether it's visiting friends, attending appointments, volunteering, or popping to the shops, driving plays a vital role in helping many older people stay active, connected and in control of their daily lives.

That's why we're shining a light on Wilko’s Wheels Driver Training, who offer specialist older driver coaching that helps people maintain their confidence, refresh their skills, and continue driving safely and independently for as long as possible.

A little extra support can make a big difference. Whether it's navigating today's busy roads, building confidence after a break from driving, or adapting to changing needs, older driver coaching is about empowering people to stay in control of their journeys.

At Good Life Sorted, we know how important independence is for living well later in life. While many people want to continue driving for as long as they safely can, there may come a time when getting behind the wheel is no longer the right option. At Good Life Sorted, we know that caring for others can be rewarding but also exhausting, and sometimes even small changes can help make the day feel more manageable.

So I put together a short talk on small daily habits and simple mood boosters for carers to share today at Milton Keynes Village Practice carers coffee morning - but unfortunately I’ve been hit with a cold and can’t attend.

All being well, I will attend the next group in November and would be glad to see you there if you are a carer.

My short presentation will explore practical ideas such as:
✅ Starting the day with a quick self-check-in ✅ Focusing on one thing at a time ✅ Taking a moment to pause and breathe ✅ Using music and simple changes of scenery to boost mood ✅ Feeling more comfortable asking for help when it's needed

I was sorry to have missed Milton Keynes' celebration of International Day of Older Persons event this year at MK Rose, but one question from the day really got me thinking...

👉 What resources in your local neighbourhood help older people stay active, independent and socially connected?
For some, it's a local park.

For others, it's a community centre, library, café, GP surgery, transport link or support service.

And sometimes it's simply knowing there's someone who can help with the everyday things.

At Good Life Sorted, we're passionate about helping older people stay connected to the communities they love.

Organised by the amazing team at Healthwatch Central Bedfordshire, it’s always such a lovely community event, bringing together local organisations, voluntary groups and services to share advice, information and support for adults of an older age across Central Bedfordshire.

The event is completely free to attend, with lunch, refreshments and entertainment included, and you can drop in at any point throughout the day.

A Hidden Gem in Milton Keynes 🌿

Good Life Sorted loves celebrating organisations that bring together inclusion, purpose and community spirit, so today I had the pleasure of visiting Camphill MK & Northants Café in Milton Keynes.

This peaceful café provides supported work experience for adults with a range of abilities, helping develop skills, confidence and independence in a welcoming environment.

I was impressed by the friendly service and the strong sense of community. Many of the ingredients used in the café come from Camphill's own gardens and artisan bakery, bringing fresh, locally produced food straight to the table.

If you're in the area, I'd highly recommend popping in for a coffee and a bite to eat. You'll enjoy great food and excellent service while supporting an organisation that is making a genuine difference in people's lives. It is a wonderful example of inclusion, sustainability and social impact working hand in hand.

World Alzheimer’s Month 2026: Diagnosis Matters

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a time to raise awareness, and challenge the stigma around dementia.

Alzheimer’s Disease International are focusing on the global theme of “The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do: A Dementia Diagnosis Matters” reminding us that timely diagnosis can transform lives, helping individuals and families access support, plan for the future, and maintain quality of life.

Early Diagnosis can open the door to understanding symptoms and managing them effectively, connecting with support groups and sharing coping strategies, empowering families and communities to demystify dementia.

Alzheimer’s Society offers various types of support locally, including signposting to support groups, and dementia advisors on their Dementia Support Line. Meanwhile MacIntyre in Milton Keynes run memory cafés for social activities.

If you have a family member who has been diagnosed with dementia, you may wish to explore the range of services that our Good Life Sorted helpers offer, such as our sitting service.
