Incredible exhibition of Ana Mendieta's artwork Tate 🧑

Drawings, sculpture, painting, performance, photography and film exploring the connection of the body to the world around us through the elements - Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space.

Always been drawn to Mendieta's work and since delving into Lorin Roche's 'The Radiance Sutras' over the past 10 months on the Embodying Ta**ra course with Sarah O’Connor and Tiffany, I'm remembering more and more that it's all interconnected - especially yoga and art β•

Reminded of verse 23 from 'The Radiance Sutras': 'This body is made of Earth and Gold...', which is often included in classes and during yoga nidra 🌎🌊πŸ”₯🌬️✨

Lots of inspiration 🌱

Loved making this piece Made with Clay Studio ⚱️

It took a while to form from idea into clay, starting back in March... Sometimes projects take time to marinate πŸ’

I enjoy finding inspiration from the world around me which gets woven into yoga and art.

I wanted to create something that looked like it came out of the earth, and was interested in these jagged rocks in Wales that looked like they had just been softly torn at the edges, like clay.

It started off by making a large coil pot...
.. Then I started having some fun with the form...
..pinching, tearing, squishing, scrunching, carving and squeezing using my hands to make texture. It was very cathartic - a stress release.

Once the form was ready for firing, I started experimenting with different glaze combinations and techniques.

After it's first firing (bisque), it was now ready to glaze.

I wanted the glaze to compliment the texture of the clay, to be applied freely and uncontrolled.

The glaze was brushed and sponged on...
..allowing the glaze to run and drip if it wanted to.

In some areas, I wanted the glaze to 'pool' where there were little valleys of clay.

Once it was ready to be fired for the second time, I needed to make a big base so that it was supported in the kiln and didn't break.

The result... It's always a surprise when the piece comes out of the kilm after the 2nd firing. You never know what you're going to find.

I love how it looks different from each angle...
..and how the light catches it from different perspectives.

The glazes reacted with one another to make new colours too.

And here it is, settling and rooting down into its new home 🌱
