I’ve been running some urban foraging walks this autumn with Grow NI, a charity and community garden project supporting asylum seekers, older people and those struggling with their mental health and social isolation.
We’ve been meandering through a north belfast park exploring the ordinary wonders around us, looking at the folklore of some of our native wild plants and trees, learning about their medicinal and healing properties, making nettle cordage, fresh herbal teas, trying homemade balms, tasting and feasting together.
So. Much. Joy!
I think the best thing for me is watching people’s eyes open to the ordinary abundance on their doorstep and tuning into the land with fresh curiosity and wonder.
These vital connections with nature and each other don’t just feed us physically, but mentally, emotionally, spiritually as well and this feels so important in our dislocated society. The extremities between the wealthiest and the poorest don’t mean anything in nature….the gifts around us are equally available to all and completely FREE.
