How do you make 1940s passenger aircraft genuinely accessible to wheelchair users while keeping the boarding experience true to the period?

That is the challenge the Blackbushe Heritage Trust discussed with PLS CEO Adam Beck during his recent visit to Blackbushe Airport in Hampshire.

The Trust is restoring two Vickers passenger aircraft, a Viking and a Valetta, to create an immersive aviation heritage experience. Its aim is to allow visitors to go aboard, experience the restored interiors and gain a sense of what air travel was like during the 1950s.

PLS is working with the Trust to develop an accessible boarding solution incorporating a passenger lift and purpose-designed step structure. The aim is to provide modern standards of accessibility and safety, while designing the structure to resemble the mobile aircraft steps used during the 1950s.

It is an unusual and exciting project, and we are pleased to be playing a part in making this piece of British aviation history accessible to more people.
