The W A (Y) S T (O) E D F R E E D O M exhibition showcases a portfolio of paintings created by a London-based Polish artist Małgorzata Drohomirecka, in which the artist sets out to revisit the story of Polonia, the 19th century personification of a Polish nation fighting for its sovereignty.

While male artists portrayed themselves as thinkers or warriors, women gazing from the canvases of iconic historical paintings, were often depicted as frail, incapacitated and reduced to a performative object. The independence for Poland arrived in 1918, after over a century of foreign occupation, but what about Polonia?

In her painterly collages, Drohomirecka questions the extent to which the 19th century image of women, created by the patriarchal structures that objectified female bodies as symbol of a ‘broken’ nation and embodiment of its martyrdom, influences their position in the realms of art and society today.

Juxtaposing elements extracted from historical paintings with pop culture references, stock images and kitsch aesthetic, Drohomirecka reimagines Polonia’s story from the perspective of both, the woman in the picture and a female artist who fights to regain control over the autonomy of her own existence. This newly formed herstory constitutes a possible blueprint for alternative versions of womanhood, representation, empowerment, self-determination, and ultimately, freedom.

Using subversive visual language, the artist sends Polonia and other women on a journey to heal the intergenerational trauma caused by patriarchy; simultaneously critiquing the establishment and questioning the status quo. What has actually changed since Wyspiański and Matejko created their allegorical visions of women? Has the political and cultural narrative around the female body and femininity shifted at all?

Do you remember Alicja Kamaj (), one of the talented artists featured in our very first RZ Equality Zine?

She is joining our RZ team and we are really excited to welcome her on board! 🎈

Alicja is a recent graduate from Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw where she specialised in Fashion Design. Her graduate project ’Karusia’ is a powerful statement on topics of femininity and empowerment! Besides fashion she experimens with illustration where shw focused on female body and feminist issues, as well as working with video and photography.

Alicja will be helping us create awesome and wholesome content on our socila media platforms while Zula and Marta are busy networking in Poland and Estonia!

Today we would love to highlight an independent space co-run by .krstic

U10 Art Space () is an independent artist-run space dedicated to supporting contemporary art founded in 2012 in Belgrade.

It was founded with the purpose to be a platform where young local artists would be shown. By collaborating with similar spaces and initiatives, U10 Art Space actively works on creating a culture of artistic education, debate and exchange between artists, curators, art theoreticians, writers and the wider public.

The main focus of the program is to create solo and group shows presenting mainly young artists from Serbia. A few slots per year are dedicated to international projects whose concept is aimed at creating active exchange and collaborating with local artists; followed by presenting mid-career artists. An integral part of the program includes events such as: exhibition guidings by artists and curators, performances, sound and music performances, discussions and panels as well as parallel events outside of the space itself and abroad.

krstic ‘s work takes the form of a diorama, traditionally a miniature representation of a particular scene or event. In this case, the slightly bizarre visual setting and unfitting sound is intentionally difficult to place geographically or otherwise, prompting the audience to weave their own narrative and project their own interpretations of what the presented scene is or isn’t. Furthermore, the diorama seems to show something living and very ‘natural’, however, the fact that the stones are made from paper mache and the organic elements, dry moss, the setting is only reminiscent to something natural.

In this way, the theatrical, viewer-oriented display mirrors the enactment, or staging of one’s ego or self. You, the viewer, are invited to explore any illogical, inconsistent parts of your self, as they reflect through the immersive, dissonant and meditative aspects of the piece.

Meet our Fab Feature .krstic!

Isidora Krstić (*1987, Belgrade) is an artist based in Vienna since 2012.
She received a Diploma in Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade and obtained her Master degree in Art&Science from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and has also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. She has exhibited her work in venues such as Castello di Rivoli - Museo di Arte Contemporanea, Athens Photo Festival, LISTE Art Fair Basel, Künstlerhaus Wien and many others, and her work is a part of private and public art collections. She also works on organising and initiating artistic projects, curating exhibitions, publication projects and translating curatorial texts. She is the co-founder of U10 Art Space in Belgrade focused on emerging artists from the region.

The focus of her work lies in the human body and its biological, political, psychological and historical facets and how notions such as identity, memory, dreams, desire and trauma embed themselves into it. Her artistic practice traverses artistic and scientific disciplines and often takes the form of an installation using a variety of media such as painting, drawing, sculpture, objects, collage, video and sound.
