NHS Birmingham and Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group is the largest clinically-led commissioning organisation in England. It was officiated by NHS England on 1 April 2018, following a merger of NHS Birmingham CrossCity CCG, NHS Birmingham South Central CCG and NHS Solihull CCG. Our Involvement Team recently visited Nishkam Healthcare Trust in West Birmingham to see first hand how they are leading the way in neighbourhood health.

Located in a community where up to 180 languages are spoken and many families face tough financial challenges, Nishkam has been a trusted, welcoming hub since 2012, built thanks to £762k in local community donations.

The team at Nishkam listen to residents and adapt services quickly to meet what people actually want and need:

👶 Start of Life: Supporting new and expectant mothers with clinical care alongside direct, in-house help for housing, finances, safeguarding, and mental health.

🦷 Pay-What-You-Can Dentistry: A volunteer-run clinic offering flexible, affordable dental care.

🧠 Mental Health Hub: Dedicated emotional wellbeing teams bringing local health partners together.

🩺 Community Health Projects: From gentle exercise classes and diabetes coaching (Game of Stones) to delivering over 50,000 vaccinations.

With an amazing volunteer team that has delivered over £4.2 million in community value, they were awarded the prestigious King’s Award for Voluntary Service in April.

Nishkam Healthcare Trust shows the incredible value of building trust, bringing services together, and letting local communities lead the way. 💙

Last week, Helen from our Involvement Team had the pleasure of visiting Midland Mencap in Weoley Castle, where she met with staff, citizens, carers and families, listening to stories about how the organisation helps adults with learning disabilities build confidence, develop independence and form lasting friendships. It was also important to listen to honest experiences of health and care services, including where communication, accessibility and reasonable adjustments could be improved.

The Involvement Team's priority this summer is simple: to get out into local communities, build relationships with voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise (VCFSE) organisations, and understand what is already helping people to live well.

Rather than arriving with a survey or a fixed agenda, we spend time getting to know communities and listening to what matters most to local people. Often, it's through these conversations that we uncover insights which help us join the dots across the health and care system and identify opportunities to improve services.

A huge thank you to everyone at Midland Mencap for such a warm welcome and for sharing your experiences so openly.

📣 Are you part of a voluntary, community, faith or social enterprise (VCFSE) organisation in Birmingham the Black Country or Solihull?
We'd love to come and visit your organisation, meet the people you support and hear what keeps local people well, what is working well, and where health and care services could improve.

Please get in touch with the Involvement Team at [email protected] to arrange a visit.
