In this Ember Path Reflection, I look at why having other men around us matters, not just for support, but for challenge, accountability and connection.

I've explored this further in my latest article, Why Men Need Other Men.

Work, relationships and family quite rightly take up a lot of our time, but it can leave surprisingly little space for friendships outside of them. Even when we do get together, it is often much easier to talk about work, hobbies or whatever we are planning to buy next than it is to talk about the things we are actually struggling with.

Men need other men around them. Not just for support when things go wrong, but for challenge, accountability, different perspectives and the opportunity to be part of something beyond ourselves.

I've written a little more about why I think these communities matter, my own experience of men's groups, and why bringing men together has become such an important part of what we are trying to build through Ember Path.

The Ember Path Campfire Gathering is back! Starting September 10th, we will be hosting regular monthly conversations around the campfire.

A great chance to connect with other men, chill around the campfire (weather and environmental conditions permitting) and help us build the Ember Path community.

Over the years, I have worked with a lot of boys and young men who have struggled in classrooms, found it difficult to sit still, pushed boundaries or been seen primarily through the problems they caused.

In the great sea of modern culture, there is very little that provides meaning and validation for these and other young people.

Yet, put some of those same young people in a woodland, give them a real responsibility, a sharp tool, a fire to manage or something useful to build, and you often begin to see a very different side of them.

That does not mean the outdoors is a simple solution to everything, but it has repeatedly made me question whether we are always giving boys and young men the right opportunities to show what they are capable of.

Are we really giving the next generation of young men a chance to matter?

As we move into a new calendar year, I’m starting to lay the groundwork for Ember Path’s programmes and events later in the year.

As part of that, I’m looking for two to three men to join Ember Path as directors.

A number of the funding streams we’re hoping to apply for require a minimum of three directors to ensure accountability. Beyond that, having a small group of men with different life experiences and perspectives at the head of Ember Path will make a real difference as the work develops.

I’m keen to keep the time commitment realistic. This is a light-touch role, focused on guidance and oversight rather than delivery.

The core responsibilities are:
– attending quarterly meetings (mostly online)
– offering insight and feedback on key decisions
– helping ensure the work stays aligned with the mission
– reviewing and signing off funding bids and accounts

There’s no expectation to be involved in day-to-day sessions or events, and no specific skills or background required — just bring yourself as you are.

If this sounds like something you’d be open to exploring, feel free to get in touch. And if someone comes to mind who might be a good fit but isn’t already connected to Ember Path, please do pass this on.

At this time of year, it’s common to feel tired — physically and mentally — and to assume that something’s wrong.

But winter has always been a season of slowing down.

Shorter days, colder weather, less light. In the natural world, nothing is trying to keep the same pace it did a few months ago. Energy is conserved. Things go quieter.

We tend to fight that by staying busy, staying switched on, pushing through, even when our bodies are asking for something different.

Tiredness isn’t failure, it’s feedback.

Sometimes the most sensible thing we can do is listen, slow down a little, and let the season be what it is. There will be time again for action and momentum. For now, it’s okay to rest.

See you all in January!
