Back to School: Why Embodiment Matters for Dancers 💃🕺✨
New term is here and I’m excited about returning to work with all my dancing bodies and have been busy over the summer developing my professional expertise developing more understanding of my work with child and adolescent bodies and their unique needs and mixing it all into my soup of Pilates for Dancers from an embodied and somatic perspective.
As dancers, we learn technique, but fewer learn embodiment as something distinct and valuable in itself - it’s usually something reserved for professional programming as an option at university usually in contemporary programmes. But the benefits are here for us at any age and stage and for any form of dance. I know how this study helped me and helps my own dancers inhabit movement from the inside out.
Here’s my observation: embodiment accelerates technique. It prevents injury. It builds a kind of real confidence that comes from knowing your body intimately, not from perfectionism or the critical voice in the mirror.
Embodiment is a skill and somatics is a profession in its own right that involves professional training. Learning to feel what you’re actually doing, not just the shape you’re making, takes practice and the right tools. When you can sense into your body with real felt awareness, your movement becomes integrated. It has depth. It’s no longer just gestures.
This is what I see separates dancers who thrive and enjoy longevity in their bodies, from those who carry tension, struggle with injury, or eventually leave because they have just fallen out of love with dance and are fed up with fighting.
If you’re ready to move differently this year, or if you need support with injury prevention, rebuilding confidence, or reconnecting to your body, you know where I am.
Looking forward to this term with my dancers- happy, healthy and confident in dance becoming the best they can be ☺️
