Running Injuries: Are You Returning to Sport Too Soon?

Getting back out on the roads after an injury is tempting, especially as the warmer months keep the motivation high. But rushing your return is one of the most common reasons runners end up back on the treatment table. The most frequent running injuries we see include shin splints, IT band syndrome, Achilles tendinopathy, and runner's knee and each one demands a structured, load-managed return rather than simply waiting until the pain subsides.

At Marni Cochrane Physio and Wellness Clinic in Bishop's Stortford, our sports injury rehabilitation approach focuses on restoring movement quality, rebuilding strength, and progressively reloading the tissues before you lace up again. That means proper biomechanical assessment, targeted rehabilitation, and a clear plan so you're not guessing when it's safe to run. Pain-free doesn't always mean ready, and understanding that distinction is what separates a full recovery from a recurring problem. Have you ever gone back to running too early and paid the price for it? Or are you currently stuck in that frustrating cycle of injury and setback? πŸƒ

Clinical Pilates vs Regular Pilates: What's the Difference?

Most people assume Pilates is Pilates. But if you're recovering from injury, managing chronic pain, or rebuilding after surgery, that assumption could actually slow your progress.

Clinical Pilates is led by a physiotherapist who has assessed your movement, identified your weaknesses, and designed a programme specifically around your body and your goals. Every exercise has a clinical reason behind it. Regular Pilates classes are great for general fitness and flexibility, but they follow a group format with no individual assessment. If you have a disc problem, post-surgical weakness, or pelvic floor dysfunction, a standard class simply cannot account for that. At Marni Cochrane Physio and Wellness Clinic, clinical Pilates is fully integrated into rehabilitation to support core stability, postural control, and long-term functional recovery - not just general conditioning. Have you tried Pilates before but felt it wasn't quite right for your specific issue? Or are you unsure which approach would suit where you're at right now? πŸ’¬

Lower Back Pain Doesn't Just "Go Away" on Its Own

Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek physiotherapy, yet it's also one of the most misunderstood. Many people wait months before getting it properly assessed, often making the problem harder to resolve. Whether your pain came on suddenly after lifting something awkward, or it's been quietly building for years, the cause matters, and so does the treatment pathway. 🎯

At Marni Cochrane Physio and Wellness Clinic in Bishop's Stortford, lower back pain is approached with a thorough assessment to identify the root cause first, not just the symptoms. That might lead to hands-on manual therapy including joint mobilisation and soft tissue techniques, targeted rehabilitation exercises to rebuild strength and movement control, or clinical Pilates to address core stability and postural patterns that often sit behind persistent pain. For some patients, acupuncture forms part of a broader plan to manage pain and support muscle function alongside other treatment. The right combination depends entirely on you. Have you been putting up with back pain longer than you should? Or tried treatments before that didn't get to the root of it? Drop a comment below. πŸ‘‡

Your First Physio Assessment: Here's What Actually Happens

Not knowing what to expect from a first physiotherapy appointment stops a lot of people from booking one. Whether you're dealing with a niggling injury, post-surgical stiffness, or persistent pain that's affecting your day-to-day life, that first session is where everything starts to make sense.

At Marni Cochrane Physio and Wellness Clinic in Bishop's Stortford, your initial assessment is a thorough, one-to-one conversation and clinical examination. Your physiotherapist will take a detailed history of your symptoms, assess your movement, identify the root cause of the problem, and begin building a treatment plan tailored specifically to you. There's no generic protocol here. Whether you need musculoskeletal rehabilitation, pelvic health support, help preparing for or recovering from joint replacement surgery, or a return-to-sport plan, the assessment shapes everything that follows. With nearly 20 years of clinical experience across the NHS, private practice, and elite sport, Marni and her team bring the kind of expertise that gets to the bottom of what's actually going on. What's the one thing that's been holding you back from booking? πŸ‘‡

Why Your Joint Still Hurts (And What Can Actually Fix It)

If you've been told to "just rest" a stiff or painful joint, you might be missing out on one of the most clinically supported treatments in physiotherapy. Joint mobilisation works by applying controlled, rhythmic movement to a joint capsule, restoring its natural range of motion, reducing pain signals, and getting the surrounding tissues functioning properly again. It's not guesswork. The mechanism is well understood, and the results are measurable.

At Marni Cochrane Physio and Wellness Clinic, our approach to manual therapy goes beyond symptom relief. Whether you're recovering from a hip replacement, managing a chronic shoulder problem, or returning to sport after injury, joint mobilisation is often a key part of restoring normal movement patterns. Combined with targeted rehabilitation and patient education, it addresses the root cause rather than masking the pain. What joint or movement issue has been holding you back lately? And have you ever had manual therapy as part of your treatment plan?

Is Your Body Ready for Surgery? Here's What Most People Miss

Most people focus on what happens after orthopaedic surgery. But what you do in the weeks before going under the knife can make a significant difference to how quickly you recover and how well your body responds to rehabilitation.

Pre-habilitation (pre-hab) is the process of strengthening your body ahead of a planned procedure, and it's one of the most underused tools in surgical preparation. Building muscle strength around the joint before your operation gives your body a head start on recovery. For example, if you're preparing for a knee replacement, strengthening your quadriceps beforehand means they'll be better equipped to support the joint post-surgery. The same principle applies to hip, shoulder, and ankle procedures. Alongside targeted strength work, improving your range of movement, optimising your posture, and understanding what your post-operative rehab programme will involve can all reduce complications and shorten recovery time. Have you been given any pre-hab guidance ahead of your surgery, or were you sent away and told simply to wait?

At Marni Cochrane Physio and Wellness Clinic in Bishop's Stortford, we specialise in pre- and post-operative rehabilitation for joint replacements and orthopaedic procedures. With nearly 20 years of clinical experience, Marni and the team build a personalised pre-hab plan tailored specifically to you and your procedure. If your surgery date is approaching, what's one thing you wish you'd known sooner about preparation? πŸ’¬

HRT: Why Your Symptoms Deserve a Real Conversation

Too many women are walking away from GP appointments with anti-anxiety medication when what they actually needed was an honest, informed conversation about HRT. As someone navigating my own HRT journey, I know first-hand how frustrating it is to feel dismissed, even when you have a professional background and some understanding of what's going on in your own body.

At our Women's Wellness Clinic in Bishop's Stortford, the GPs we work alongside take the time to actually listen, and that has made a genuine difference to my experience and to the women I see in clinic every week. HRT isn't one-size-fits-all. It takes careful assessment, open dialogue, and practitioners who are willing to adjust and support you over time rather than reach for the quickest solution. If you've ever left a consultation feeling unheard, you are not alone and you deserve better than that. Have you found it difficult to access the right support for your hormonal health? πŸ’¬

Pain Gone Doesn't Mean You're Fixed

One of my patients said something recently that stopped me in my tracks: "Just because the pain has gone doesn't mean you are fixed." After just 2 sessions, her neck pain had disappeared but the underlying dysfunction hadn't resolved. She got it. And that understanding is exactly what separates short-term relief from lasting recovery.

This is one of the most common patterns we see in physiotherapy. Pain eases, life gets busy, and treatment stops. Then 2-3 months later, the same problem returns because the root cause was never fully addressed. Pain is a signal, not the whole story. At Marni Cochrane, our approach is built on nearly 20 years of clinical experience and a genuine commitment to treating the dysfunction, not just the symptom. Have you ever stopped treatment early because you felt better, only to find the problem came back? πŸ‘‡

Maternal Mental Health Week: Your Body Matters Too

Maternal Mental Health Week (4th to 10th May) shines a light on something that doesn't get nearly enough attention. And while the conversation rightly centres on emotional wellbeing, physical recovery after birth plays a huge role in how mothers feel mentally. Pelvic floor dysfunction, chronic pain, fatigue, and feeling disconnected from your body are all real, common, and treatable.

Postnatal physiotherapy and a Mummy MOT are not luxuries. They are clinical assessments designed to identify what's actually happening in your body after birth, whether that's pelvic floor weakness, diastasis recti, or musculoskeletal pain that's quietly affecting your daily life and your mood. When your body feels stronger and more functional, everything else becomes a little more manageable. Have you had a postnatal assessment since giving birth? If not, what's held you back? πŸ’›
