And it's good that I understand pain from both sides

Sometimes our professional lives are shaped by things we never expected to experience ourselves.

Seven years ago, following a car accident, I found myself living with ongoing pain that didn't seem to have a clear answer.

I attended appointments, followed the advice I was given and did what I could to manage it.

But the pain persisted.

And I discovered first-hand that living with ongoing pain isn't simply about something hurting.

It's the disturbed sleep.
The things you stop doing.
The constant adjustments you make without even realising.
The frustration when your body won't cooperate.
And the emotional exhaustion of trying to carry on with normal life while you're dealing with it.

That experience changed the way I thought about pain โ€” and ultimately influenced the way I work today.

Medical care was, and remains, important. But I also became increasingly interested in what could be done alongside it to support the whole person.

That led me to train extensively in different complementary approaches and eventually shaped the clinic I run today.

So when somebody sits in my clinic and tells me they're fed up, frustrated, exhausted or simply want to be able to do something they used to do...

I understand more than they might realise.

I can't promise outcomes, and complementary therapy doesn't replace medical care.

But I can offer time, knowledge, a whole-person approach and a place where what you're experiencing is taken seriously.

Because sometimes the person sitting in the practitioner's chair has sat on the other side of that conversation too. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŒฟ Have you ever heard of Plai essential oil?

Lavender, Tea Tree and Peppermint may be familiar names โ€” but there are hundreds of essential oils, and some of the less well-known ones are fascinating.

Plai (Zingiber cassumunar) is related to ginger and originates in Southeast Asia.

It's one of the oils I may consider in my clinical aromatherapy work when I'm creating an individual blend for someone experiencing muscular or joint discomfort.

And that's one of the things I love about clinical aromatherapy.

I don't have a little collection of standard recipes labelled โ€œbad backโ€, โ€œsore kneeโ€ or โ€œaching shoulderโ€ and give everybody the same thing.

I look at the person, what they're experiencing, their health and medication, what I want the blend to achieve, and then select appropriate oils and concentrations for them.

Sometimes that means using an oil you've probably never even heard of!

๐ŸŒฟ Plai is one of those little gems in my aromatherapy cupboard.

Had you heard of it before?

Why I don't look just at where it hurts.

Where you feel the pain isn't always the whole story.

Our bodies don't work as a collection of completely separate parts. Muscles, joints, connective tissue and movement patterns all influence one another.

That's why, when someone comes into clinic saying:

โ€œMy shoulder hurts.โ€

โ€œMy back keeps going.โ€

โ€œMy knee is painful.โ€

โ€ฆI don't necessarily spend the entire appointment concentrating on that one spot.

I want to look at the bigger picture.

How are you moving?
Where are you restricted?
What else has been happening in your body?
Has something elsewhere changed the way you're standing or moving?
Could tension or restriction in another area be contributing to what you're experiencing?

This whole-body thinking is one of the reasons I've trained in approaches including Kinetic Chain Release, Connective Tissue Release and the Dr John Cross Method of Acupressure.

Each is different, but they all give me additional ways of looking beyond one isolated symptom.

It doesn't mean every painful knee is caused by something somewhere else โ€” and it certainly isn't about diagnosing medical conditions.

It simply means I don't assume that where it hurts is the only place worth looking.

Sometimes we need to look at the connections. ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Well, this wasn't in my plans for Sundayโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜‚

I was already heading to the Point of Light Mind, Body & Spirit Fayre in Monmouth this Sunday, but I've had a last-minute message to say a stall has become available.

So apparently Jan Baker Wellbeing is having a stall after all! ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

I'm going to have a careful rummage through my stock and bring along a selection of goodies โ€” without attempting to relocate the entire contents of the clinic in Monmouth! ๐Ÿ˜‚

I'll also have information with me about the therapies I offer, so if you've ever wondered what I do, what might be suitable for you, or you simply fancy coming over for a chat, please do.

There's plenty happening throughout the day, with therapists, readers, healers, stalls and talks โ€” all the details are on the poster.

Come and say hello if you're there โ€” I'll be the one wondering how my supposedly small selection of stock turned into six boxes. ๐Ÿคฃ

Sometimes people living with ongoing pain don't need to be told, yet again, what they should be doing.

They've often already tried.

They've attended appointments. Followed advice. Taken medication. Changed how they move. Changed how they sleep. Stopped doing things they enjoy.

And they're still struggling.

One thing I hear repeatedly from clients is how important it feels simply to be listened to.

Because when pain has been part of your life for a long time, it can be incredibly frustrating when you feel rushed, misunderstood, or as though the only thing that matters is the painful bit of your body.

When you come to see me, I want to know more than โ€œWhere does it hurt?โ€

I want to know:

What does it stop you doing?
What makes it better or worse?
How is it affecting your sleep?
Has it changed how you work or socialise?
And perhaps most importantly โ€” what would you like to be able to do again?

I can't promise to make anybody's pain disappear.

But I can promise that you'll be heard.

And sometimes, that's a very important place to start. โค๏ธ

๐ŸŒฟ How much do you REALLY know about aromatherapy?

Most people have heard of Lavender. You might have a few essential oils at home, perhaps use a diffuser, or know that certain aromas help you relax.

But aromatherapy is much more than simply choosing an oil because you like the smell!

Do you know why two oils from the same plant family can behave very differently?

Or why the chemistry of an essential oil matters?

And what on earth esters and aldehydes have to do with any of it? ๐Ÿค”

On Monday 28th September, I'm repeating my Aromatherapy for Health talk โ€” an informal, interactive evening exploring essential oils, how they work and how they can be used safely and effectively at home.

There'll be oils plenty of opportunity to ask questions, and you absolutely do not need any previous aromatherapy knowledge.

๐ŸŒฟ ยฃ10 per person
๐ŸŒฟ ยฃ5 for Discovery Circle members who've attended this talk before and fancy a refresher
๐ŸŒฟ You'll also receive my essential-oil toolkit list to take home.

All the details are on the poster.

If you'd like to come along, message me or call 07756 932601 to book your place.

And yes โ€” bring a pen and notepad. You know what I'm like once I start talking about essential oils. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Living with pain affects more than the bit that hurts.

When pain becomes part of everyday life, it can start affecting everything around it too.

You might find yourself avoiding activities you used to enjoy. You may sleep badly, become frustrated by things you once did without thinking, or find that your mood and confidence begin to change.

And sometimes one of the hardest parts is feeling that nobody really understands just how much it's affecting you.

Pain isn't simply a physical experience.

That's one of the reasons I take a whole-person approach in clinic. Before deciding what might help, I want to understand you โ€” what's hurting, certainly, but also what it's stopping you from doing and how it's affecting your everyday life.

Because you're a person experiencing pain.

You're not just a painful back, shoulder or knee.

๐ŸŒฟ Aromatherapy FAQ: How do you actually use essential oils?

When people think of aromatherapy, they often think of massage.

But that's only one way of using essential oils!

There are lots of different ways that essential oils can be incorporated into your everyday wellbeing, depending on the oil, the person using it and what you're hoping to achieve.

For example, essential oils can be used in:

๐ŸŒฟ Massage and body oils
๐ŸŒฟ Creams and lotions
๐ŸŒฟ Rollerballs
๐ŸŒฟ Bath and shower products
๐ŸŒฟ Personal inhalers
๐ŸŒฟ Gels
๐ŸŒฟ Clay preparations
๐ŸŒฟ Diffusers and other methods of inhalation

The substance we use to safely carry or dilute an essential oil is often referred to as a carrier โ€” and choosing the right carrier can be just as important as choosing the essential oils themselves.

That's one of the things I love about aromatherapy: there isn't just one way to use it.

And you don't necessarily have to live near my clinic to benefit from my aromatherapy knowledge.

I can offer advice and create appropriate aromatherapy products for use at home, depending on your individual circumstances and what you're looking for.

So if you've been following my Aromatherapy FAQs this week from somewhere rather further afield โ€” you haven't been left out! ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐ŸŒฟ Aromatherapy FAQ: Do you have to have a consultation, like you do at the doctor's?

If essential oils are being selected and blended specifically for you, then yes โ€” you should have a consultation first.

It doesn't have to feel terribly formal!

Your aromatherapist may talk everything through with you, or you'll usually be asked to complete a consultation form covering things such as your general health, medical history, medications and what you'd like support with.

Why do we need to know all that?

Because essential oils aren't one-size-fits-all.

An oil that may be perfectly appropriate for one person may not be the best choice for somebody else. Your consultation helps your aromatherapist identify any precautions or contraindications and choose suitable oils, dilutions and methods of use for you.

It's also your opportunity to ask questions and talk about what you're hoping to achieve.

๐ŸŒฟ But what if you can't get to the clinic โ€” or you're not even sure whether aromatherapy is right for you?

I offer a FREE 15-minute consultation, which is already available to book online.

We can have a chat about what you're looking for, answer your questions and decide what the most appropriate next step might be โ€” without you having to commit to a treatment first.
