Am I drinkin too much?

Knowing how much is too much can be confusing when it comes to alcohol. Most of us feel that we know when we've overdone it, but sometimes drinking can creep up on us and we find that we're drinking more than we would like.

Your alcohol units

The UK's Chief Medical Officers - the top doctors - recommend not drinking more than 14 units a week. But what is a unit? And how many are in your drink?

Units help us to calculate the quantity of pure alcohol in our drinks using its strength and size. One unit equals 10ml or 8g of pure alcohol.

You can work out how much alcohol is in your drink - based on its strength and size - by using the following equation:

strength (alcohol by volume or ABV) x the volume of the drink (in millilitres) + 1,000 = the total number of units in your drink

to see how many units are in your drink.

Ovarian cancer can be hard to spot - but early detection makes a real difference. Women in Gateshead who have gone through the menopause can now self refer for a scan if they’re experiencing symptoms. They don't need to speak to their GP first.

Symptoms to look out for include:
• Bloating or tummy pain
• Changes in toilet habits – weeing or pooing more often
• Indigestion or acid reflux
• Unexpected weight loss or feeling tired

We are pleased to share our Friends & Family Test for May 2026.
We always read every comment and are pleased our patients are honest with us.

We have installed the callback feature on our phone line and instead of waiting in the queue, when prompted and a member of the care navigation team will call you back.

You can also send econsults to us.
The NHS app has a new look and is easier to use - turning notifications on will let you receive messages from the surgery.

As always, please keep giving your feedback when you get the message after your appointment. It is always nice to receive comments when the member of staff is named too.
