My first experience travelling abroad with Coeliac Disease ✨️
Whilst it definitely involved a bit of researching in advance, it was a huge relief that there were a number of dedicated gluten free safe places to eat that meant the whole holiday didn't revolve around eating out stress 😅
My top spots for trying if you're visiting Budapest:
📍RETRO LANGOS
Incredible traditional langos - which is sort of a mix between a large donut/garlic bread and honestly one of the best things I ate. Retro Langos is the best place for langos with a dedicated gluten free menu 🙌
📍EDES MACKO
Serves gluten free chimney cakes on Wednesdays and Fridays only - this was so delicious and absolutely huge. I had a cinnamon glazed with vanilla cream and was 10/10
📍PIROS PAPRIKA
Isn't a dedicated gluten free spot and doesn' have lots of choices, BUT does detail very carefully every food item that contains gluten and had good knowledge for avoiding cross contamination. This hungarian sausage came with onion mash, sauerkraut and honey mustard and was divine
📍FREE BAKERY
All gluten free options and also offered lactose free and vegan bakes. The lemon cruffin was lush, and the cheese bun, pain au chocolat and cinnamon swirl were fairly good - need to be eaten fresh (and not like me, scoffed the next morning at the airport)
📍NONGLUTEN ITALIAN
Completely gluten free menu, carbonate was great but my partner's pizza was incredible. Definitely recommend and staff were super lovely 👌
📍KAPTAFA
A cute little nook for breakfast/brunch - lots of gluten free choices and clearly labelled. The toast that came with my eggs was the best gf bread I've tried! Staff had good knowledge of Coeliacs
Honourable mentions that we didn't get chance to explore include:
📍Bohemtanya- a dedicated gluten free restaurant serving traditional Hungarian dishes
📍Tibidabo - gluten free bakery with pastries, cakes and sandwiches
📍McDonalds - because they actually have gluten free bun options so you can enjoy a cheeseburger!
