Join a clinical study that aims to move research – and people – forward

• Are you 18 years or older living with obesity or overweight?
• Do you also have Type 2 diabetes?

If the above relates to you, you may be able to join the KaiNETIC-2 Study. The KaiNETIC-2 Study is looking to learn more about different doses of an investigational study drug designed to help people with Type 2 diabetes lose weight, lower blood sugar levels, and improve their health.

Different doses of the study drug will be compared with a placebo. Both are together referred to as ‘study medication’. A placebo looks like the study drug but contains no active medicine. Participants will have a higher chance of receiving the study drug. The study medication will be given as a subcutaneous injection, that is under the skin. You will take it once every week. The study will last up to 84 weeks. There will be no cost for the study medication, or study-related health assessments and medical tests.

An Ethics Committee (EC) has reviewed this study. An EC protects the rights, safety, and wellbeing of study participants.

Last week, we were delighted to meet with the Canford Heath Neighbourhood Watch to discuss the changes taking place across our hospitals, with Royal Bournemouth Hospital becoming our emergency care site and Poole Hospital our planned care site.

It was a fantastic opportunity to share updates and discuss what these changes mean for everyone. Thank you to all who joined us.

We also enjoyed visiting the Ferndown COPD Support Group for another insightful and engaging discussion.

A huge thank you to everyone for your warm welcome and valuable feedback.

Shout out to our clinical, digital and nursing teams who have worked together to create an electronic alcohol withdrawal assessment (CIWA), enabling them to better identify patients in need of support. Alcohol withdrawal can be very dangerous if not managed properly, but this new digital tool helps identify patients at risk more effectively, while enabling our specialist addiction care team to monitor them even when they’re not on the wards, stepping in if required.

After two years of development, it was launched in July and within the first two weeks, more than 100 patients were started on the electronic CIWA pathway. Specialist addiction nurse Lucie and clinical digital nurse Helen were two of the team involved and said it’s making a huge difference to patient care and safety already thanks to a “massive collaborative effort”.

Well done, !

🎨 From the tide to the trees…

A new burst of colour and creativity has arrived at the BEACH Building at Royal Bournemouth Hospital. 💙

Created by south coast studio Orakel Workshop's site-specific artist and designer Jac Seifert, the vibrant new artwork celebrates the natural beauty of South East Dorset, from its coastline to its forests. 🌊🌳

Inspired by places nominated by NHS staff and local people, From the tide to the trees was shaped by the community it serves and unveiled on Wednesday 29 July.

Located on the east wall of the BEACH Building, the artwork offers a welcoming focal point for patients, visitors and staff, bringing a sense of calm, connection and hope to the hospital environment.

This is part of Art Space, our wider arts strategy, supporting the use of creativity to enhance hospital spaces and promote wellbeing. Art Space is funded by University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity

A huge thank you to Jac, Orakel Workshop, our NHS colleagues, local communities and everyone who helped bring this beautiful project to life.

We recently welcomed a very special guest to our laboratory in Poole Hospital...

11-year old Ollie, along with his mum and dad, were invited to the Pathology Department for a behind-the-scenes look at the lab as part of 'Harvey's Lab Tours', a national initiative aiming to help young patients understand the role of biomedical science in their diagnosis and treatment. 💙

"Ollie regularly visits Poole Hospital for blood tests following his liver transplant, which will have taken place 10 years ago this August, at Kings College Hospital", said his mum, Hannah.

"The team was able to answer all questions Ollie had prepared, and he really enjoyed the ‘hands on’ parts of the tour such as spinning bloods, using the microscope and seeing the different blood groups."

"Hopefully this experience will help him overcome his fears in the future, and the opportunity for these tours will be great for other young patients."

Stephanie Brolan is a senior biomedical scientist at Poole and led the tour. She said: “It was wonderful to welcome Ollie to Poole, giving us a unique chance to bring patient interactions into the laboratory. The team and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and want to build on this success so more children can feel connected to their healthcare journey."

Last week, teams from across UHD came together for a mock patient move between Poole Hospital and Royal Bournemouth Hospital, helping us prepare for the separation of planned and emergency care as part of our transformation programme.

The simulation gave us valuable learning and helped build confidence that we're ready to deliver safe, well-coordinated patient moves.

A huge thank you to everyone involved and to our relocation partners, Health Care Relocations, for their expertise, support and teamwork, which helped make the exercise such a success.🙌
