Intention as a General Excuse?
How often do we read claims from so-called "sound healers" that intention is the absolute key to their work? Today, we are clearing up this myth.
The difference between a "normal" musical performance and a sound healing session is not intentionāit is the strict boundary of how one must perform.
Performing music is art, and art is the free expression of any emotion or concept. It can range from soft to hard, simple to complex. Sound healing serves a completely different purpose.
Everyone performs with intention! "Intention" is merely used as a convenient excuse for not knowing how to actually facilitate a sound healing session. Nobody performs a sound healing session with bad intentionsāat least, no one of sound mind.
The real difference is that sound healing requires a highly specific approach. There is no room for ego, selfishness, or harshness.
Misinformation plays a massive role in leading sound healers down the wrong path. Many foolishly believe in "sacred healing frequencies." Very often, they play loudly and aggressively because someone convinced them that louder means more healing. That is the single most dangerous myth in the scene, because it causes direct physical harm.
Take a mid-sized symphonic gong, for example. When you push such a gong into a white-noise crescendo, you produce volume levels up to 120 dB (decibels). That is as loud as a jet engine taking off. Sustaining this for even a few minutes causes immediate, direct physical harm to you and everyone in the room.
For context, a normal conversation sits at around 60ā70 dB. Raising your voice brings it to 80ā90 dB. The critical detail about decibels is that the scale is logarithmicāmeaning an increase in volume drastically reduces the time it takes to cause permanent damage.
You can be exposed to 85 dB for up to eight hours relatively safely. At 90 dB, safe exposure drops to four hours. At 100 dB, safe exposure shrinks to mere minutes before permanent hearing damage occurs. Delivering a prolonged white-noise crescendo into a room isn't "healing"āit is sonic warfare.
If you are ignorant of these physics and play with unchecked intensity, you damage your own health and the health of your clients. It does not matter if you have the best intentions in the world. Ignorance of fundamental physics results in trauma: nausea, severe headaches, elevated stress response, tinnitus, and permanent hearing loss.
Nothing promised on an AI-generated flyer will come true. You will simply harm the people who trusted you.
This harsh reality is precisely why the Gong Police was founded. We would much rather spend our time elsewhere, but people are being physically hurt, and that is completely unacceptable.
The Illusion of Frequencies
You must free your mind from the lies surrounding "sacred healing frequencies." Throw your workshop certificate in the trashāit is meaningless. The majority of what you were taught in that weekend seminar was fiction and pseudoscience designed to make a sale. You were fooled, and at the end of the course, you happily purchased your first set of "healing instruments tuned to healing frequencies."
No magical instrument or specific frequency does the work for you. YOU are supposed to do the work.
If you do not even know how to properly hold and control a mallet, you will never play well. Playing with intention applies to every performer in every genre. Using it as a defence is meaningless.
What matters is HOW you play, not WHAT you play.
Play softly. Play smoothly. Play gently, with deep spatial awareness. Play in a way that does not physically or mentally attack the listener. Life provides enough stressāpeople do not come to a session to be challenged by chaotic noise. Our role is to bring people back to a neutral, natural, balanced centerānot to push them toward some mythical "high frequency."
"High frequency" is another lie born from a dualistic mindset. High is not inherently good, and low is not inherently bad. If you are tuned too high or too low, you are simply out of balance. It is that simple. The scene has completely forgotten the quiet center: the balanced baseline nature gave us.
The most embarrassing part of this whole "high vs. low frequency" narrative is that nobody pushing it can tell you which frequency they are actually talking about. Ask them. You will get a blank stare, because there is no scientific answer.
Humans are not built on a single frequency. In fact, very few things in nature exist as a single isolated frequency (beyond basic chemical elements on the periodic table). Even visible light operates across a broad bandwidth.
A musical instrument never produces a single frequency. That is basic acoustics. Every instrument produces a fundamental pitch accompanied by a complex series of harmonic overtones. A symphonic gong is a massive wall of soundāa single gong can generate a spectrum starting near 0 Hz and extending past the upper limit of human hearing at 20 kHz.
Singing bowls, tuning forks, gongsānone of them emits a single, isolated frequency. The unique harmonic fingerprint of an instrument is what allows your ear to distinguish a gong from a bowl, a flute, or a piano. Without harmonics, every instrument on Earth would sound identical.
As human beings, our bodies consist of trillions of complex, interacting frequencies. If someone tells you to "raise your frequency," ask them specifically which one they mean. They certainly aren't talking about your cellular vibrational frequencyāaccelerating that produces heat, which we call a fever. Raise it too much, and you die.
Biological frequencies are dynamic and pulsating. Your heart rate is a frequency measured in BPM (beats per minute). You do not want to raise your resting heart rate unnaturally. The body is constantly self-regulating, so what imaginary frequency are these practitioners trying to alter?
The truth is, people have confused vibe with vibration. A "high vibe" is simply a colloquial term for a positive emotional state. We can all agree that positive emotional states are wonderful. However, when life brings grief or loss, a "low vibe" state is completely natural, healthy, and necessary for processing human emotion.
What Must a Professional Do?
If you want to be a conscious, professional practitioner, here is your path forward:
Abandon blind belief and do the actual work.
Learn and practice real control, technique, and touch.
Developing real skill takes years of dedicated practice. It cannot be acquired during a two-day weekend retreat that hands out participation certificates. Start questioning everything you are taught, and demand verified, logical sources.
If an instructor tells you that the chakras correspond neatly to the C-major scale (A, B, C, D, E, F, G), ask for a refund immediately. It is complete nonsense. There is zero historical, physical, or logical basis connecting standard Western musical notes directly to the subtle body chakras. Nobody knows the exact resonant frequency of a chakra.
The only tangible link we have to the traditional chakra system is colorāwhich was integrated long after the initial concepts were documented. Color is electromagnetic frequency (visible light). If we map the visible light spectrum to the musical scale via octave equivalency, we get the only logically defensible relationship between musical notes and chakras:
Root ā Red - F #
Sacral ā Orange - G #
Solar Plexus ā Yellow - A #
Heart ā Green - C
Throat ā Blue-Green - C #
Third Eye ā Blue -D
Crown ā Red-Violet - F
Because colors exist on a fluid spectrum rather than rigid points, transitional notes (like G for Red-Orange) act as bridges between centers. This provides a logical framework while allowing full creative expression across the entire musical scale.
Anything outside of this clear physics framework is usually invented on the spot to sell instruments and workshop seats. It is a sales script disguised as ancient wisdom.
How to Choose a Real Teacher
Before enrolling in any workshop or training program, thoroughly research the instructor:
- Demand unedited recordings: Look for full-length, high-quality audio and video performances. Watch and listen critically.
- If they don't have performance footage, walk away: If an instructor cannot provide full, unedited recordings of their playing, something is fundamentally wrong.
- Close your eyes and listen: Ignore the theatrical light shows, costume choices, and dramatic movements. Focus purely on the sound. How does your body react?
- Trust your physiology: If the audio sounds harsh, frantic, uncoordinated, or ego-driven, save your money and stay away.
"Playing with intention" is not an excuse for poor technique. The best intentions in the world cannot make up for bad technique and physical damage.
