🌹Giving in memory of a loved one 🌹
After losing someone we love, many people want to find a way to do something meaningful in their memory.

Choosing to make a donation to a charity that was important to them can be a special way of remembering their life and supporting a cause that mattered to them.

At W. Smith & Sons, we work with Memory Giving to help families arrange online collections in memory of their loved one.

A dedicated page can be created with a photograph, a personal message and details of the funeral. Family and friends can then make donations online and leave their own messages, memories or tributes.

Where eligible, donors can also provide the necessary details for Gift Aid to be claimed, helping the chosen charity receive a little more from each donation at no additional cost to the donor.

Online collections can also be helpful for family and friends who are unable to attend the funeral but would still like to contribute and pay their respects.

If you would like to arrange a collection in memory of your loved one, please speak to one of our funeral directors. We can help set up a dedicated page with your permission and make the process as straightforward as possible.

Sometimes, a gift in someone's memory can be a lasting way to honour the life they lived and the causes they cared about.

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Paul, one of our experienced funeral directors at W. Smith & Sons. 👋

Paul is a qualified funeral director with 12 years’ experience in the funeral profession, including 10 years supporting families across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the wider local community.

For the past three years, he has also worked as a funeral celebrant, giving him the opportunity to support families in creating and delivering personal and meaningful funeral services.

Being a funeral director is a role Paul feels very privileged to do. Over the years, he has met and supported many different families, and his approach is always centred around listening, understanding and being there when people need it most.

He believes that, during what can be an incredibly difficult time, honest advice, reassurance and practical support can help make things feel a little less daunting. Taking the time to understand what matters to each family is an important part of the support he provides.

As a celebrant also, Paul particularly enjoys getting to know more about the person who has died - hearing their stories, learning about the life they lived and the people who meant the most to them. He enjoys helping families create a service that genuinely reflects their loved one and celebrates the life they shared.

Away from work, family and community remain a big part of Paul’s life. He is a husband to Hana, who he is also fortunate enough to work alongside, and a dad to three children. Family life keeps him busy, including coaching his children's football teams, which gives him the opportunity to spend time with them while also being involved in the local community.

For Paul, family, community and supporting people are important parts of both his personal life and the work he does.

He feels very honoured to be able to serve families at such an important time in their lives and to play a small part in supporting people within the local community.

We're very fortunate to have him as part of the W. Smith & Sons team.

We're all aware that grief doesn't pause for our 9-5 work, but looking after your own well-being should take a priority.

Returning to work after a loss can feel surreal and trying to focus on tasks while carrying this weight inside can be tough. Some days will be harder than others.

Just remember that it's okay to take breaks, to be honest with trusted colleagues, and to ask for flexibility if you need it. Take one step at a time, one day at a time, even one task at a time, and make sure you're getting the support in your workplace as much as you need it.
