At Autistic Girls Network, we see this pattern constantly: a girl who held it together at school for years, masking every moment of every day, until one day she couldn't.

The school sees a child who stopped attending. The family sees a child who can't get out of bed, can't eat, sometimes can't speak. Both of those things are true, and they are not the same picture.

Barriers to attendance in autistic girls are almost always the end of a long road, not the beginning of a behaviour problem. Understanding that distinction changes everything about how we respond.
