I specialise in helping individuals navigate painful issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship issues, the impacts of trauma and the pressures of being neurodivergent. Coming from a background in the arts and literature, I pay particular attention to the narratives and disguises we adopt to shield ourselves from pain. Often, defences formed to cope with difficult experiences in our past can become disruptive in our current lives, damaging our sense of self and harming our relationships. I see my job as helping you to find the emotional tools needed to make sense of what you have been through, so that you can tolerate difficult emotions and learn to proritise your own needs.

"In the therapeutic process, beginnings and endings can be linked to the ways that we each experience relationships, specifically attachments and losses. These experiences shape how we trust new people, how we set boundaries, and what we need in order to feel safe in any new situation and during periods of separation." Kirsty Toal

How psychotherapy can help shape a better world by Sam Jahara

When people think about psychotherapy, they often imagine it as a deeply personal journey focused on dealing with emotional pain, improving relationships, or overcoming life’s challenges. While this is true, psychotherapy also has a wider impact. By helping individuals become more self-aware, compassionate, and authentic, it has the potential to contribute to a healthier, more…

What types of emotional and psychological issues typically bring a person to seek out psychotherapy? In this video Sam Jahara, UKCP registered psychotherapist talks about some of the more common issues that bring a person to psychotherapy and how these presenting issues are often symptoms of deeper issues. Psychotherapy is a process of uncovering and making sense of what you feel, why you feel the way you do and then in helping you to move through those emotions.

At Brighton and Hove Psychotherapy we believe that the mind and body are intricately linked. That what is felt in one is felt and, in the case of the body, expressed, in the other. Our experience is that too many practitioners focus purely on the mind of the client and ignore the body. Yet, research increasingly shows the mind and body as one emotional system.

The fear of motherhood: understanding anxiety about becoming a parent by Joseph Bailey

One major decision in any adult’s life is choosing whether or not to have children. For some, it can be more a question of when than if; perhaps they’ve always imagined having kids or just known for their entire lives that motherhood is for them. For others, the pull to have one’s own children never…
