Young patients and families score highly against visitors Bristol City FC ⚽

Players and staff from Bristol City FC came to visit Bristol Royal Hospital for Children as part of their giving back day.

During their visit, the team did a range of activities with young people at the hospital – even a kickabout in the activity centre garden where patients and families got to show off their skills.

The club also kindly gifted the hospital team a special signed 25th birthday shirt, thanking everyone who has been a part of the hospital since it opened in 2001.

Welcome to Bristol NHS Foundation Trust! 👋

Last week we welcomed 138 Foundation Year 1 (F1) Doctors to the Trust for our first ever, combined F1 induction since becoming Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

Our new starters began with their mandatory induction before rotating through a series of practical workshops. They participated in a simulation half day, where they were put through their paces, experiencing and managing every day medical emergencies and other common scenarios. They also spent time shadowing on the wards, settling into their new surrounding and getting to know their colleagues.

This week, Foundation Year 2 and higher-grade Resident Doctors and Dentists are due to join us as part of their Summer rotation.

We wish them all the best in their year ahead. 💙

Today marks World Hepatitis Day 2026.

At Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, we want to encourage people at risk of Hepatitis C to get tested. Hepatitis C is often symptomless but easily treated.

You can order a free home-test kit today if any of the following risk factors apply to you:

- If you've ever lived in, or had medical or dental treatment, in a country where Hepatitis C is more common
- If you've had a tattoo or piercing abroad or in prison
- If you share personal items, such as toothbrushes, scissors and razors
- If your mother had Hepatitis C
- If you've had unprotected s*x with someone with Hepatitis C
- If you had a blood transfusion, blood products, or an organ or tissue transplant in the UK before 1996.
- If you've ever used drug paraphernalia, or ever shared injecting equipment for any type of drug

You can order a free Hepatitis C home-test kit from NHS England by visiting https://hepctest.nhs.uk/

Don’t let the past affect your future.

The Emergency Department at Weston General Hospital is now open in line with its usual operating hours, having been closed yesterday afternoon due to a fire.

The ED waiting area is open, but access to it has been temporarily redirected via the main entrance to the hospital.

Please continue to consider whether a Minor Injury Unit, local pharmacy or your GP is better suited to your needs and only attend ED if you require urgent or emergency care.

27/07/2026

Following a fire this afternoon, the Emergency Department at Weston General Hospital, which operates between 8am and 10pm daily, will remain closed overnight and reopen at 8am tomorrow morning, in line with its usual operating hours. Access to the Emergency Department will be via the main entrance to the hospital.

Please attend your next closest emergency department or local minor injury unit if you need urgent or emergency care in the meantime.

We can confirm that all patients and staff were evacuated safely and no one was injured as a result of the fire.

Thank you to our staff and emergency services colleagues for their support.

🎉 Congratulations to Nic Manning and Oli Griffiths, who have been shortlisted for a prestigious Nursing Times Award for their work to make research a routine part of patient care across Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.

Their innovative Research Links programme empowers nurses and healthcare professionals to become local research champions, helping colleagues connect patients with research opportunities and embedding research into everyday clinical practice.

Since launching in 2023, the programme has grown to include more than 100 Research Links across our City and Weston Hospital Operating Unit, improving awareness of research opportunities for patients and strengthening links between clinical and research teams.

The programme has already gained national recognition and is now being explored by NHS organisations across the country.

👏 Well done, Nic, Oli and all our Research Links who are helping build a culture where research is everyone's business. Good luck at the Nursing Times Awards in October!

Congratulations to our Staff Health Team, who have been shortlisted for a prestigious Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Health & Wellbeing Award. 🎉

The team has been named as one of just three finalists in the Health and Wellbeing in Workplaces category, recognising their work supporting staff across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

The shortlisted project focuses on bringing health screening directly into the workplace, helping to reach staff who may otherwise miss routine GP-based health checks. By offering convenient workplace health assessments, the team engages groups often at higher risk of preventable ill health, including shift workers, lower-paid staff and colleagues from diverse communities.

We're incredibly proud of everyone involved and of the impact this project is having across our community. 👏

Our most recent Community Participation Group (CPG) meeting took place virtually, bringing together members, community representatives and colleagues from across our services for another valuable discussion. Holding the session online is an example of the different ways we work to support community inclusivity and accessibility, so more people are able to participate and contribute their views.

A highlight of the meeting was welcoming colleagues from our Adult Therapies teams, who shared insights into their work and joined conversations about how we can continue to improve experiences and outcomes for the communities we serve.

The discussion generated a number of meaningful ideas and reflections, with CPG members drawing on their lived experience to help identify opportunities for better ways to collate feedback from our patients accessing these services.

It was encouraging to see such active engagement and a genuine willingness to learn from one another. These conversations play an important role in ensuring community voices continue to influence and shape service development.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a positive and productive session. ❤️
