This combined workforce of around 13,000 staff deliver over 100 different clinical services across ten different sites. We provide specialist services while remaining at the heart of the community, delivery the best quality treatment for patients in the South West and beyond. Our staff are the lifeblood of the Trust. They deliver general diagnostic, medical and surgical services to the populations of central and South Bristol and North Somerset, as well as specialism such as children’s services, cardiac and cancer services, and other smaller specialities which are nationally commissioned. The merged organisation has given the Trust the opportunity to create something new, by taking everything that’s good about Weston Area Health NHS Trust and everything that’s good about UH Bristol to create something even better, with a greater purpose.

Did you see our doctors on BBC Breakfast this morning talking about Emergency 24/7 – the documentary filmed in the adult regional Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital NHS?

The BBC documentary starts at 9pm tomorrow on BBC Two.

Emergency Department lead consultant Jayne talked about feeling "tearful with pride for the teams she works with", the importance of reassuring the people they look after and how real the documentary feels.

Intensive Care Unit consultant Reston said he feels privileged to do his job and hopes it inspires people to see the rewarding jobs in healthcare and the value they bring.

Today is VJ (Victory over Japan) Day, which marks the end of the Second World War.

In 1945, although fighting had ended in Europe in May, lots of Allied troops including UK, USA, and USSR soldiers were still fighting against Japan in East Asia before Japan confirmed their surrender on 15 August.

As an organisation, we honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the war and remember all who gave so much for peace and freedom.

We are proud to support our Armed Forces community, and dedicated NHS care and support is available for those in military service or veterans.

We were delighted to host Matt Bishop, MP for the Forest of Dean, this week for a visit to The Princess Royal Bristol Surgical Centre at Southmead Hospital.

Matt met his knee surgeon Mr Damian Clark, Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant, and had a tour of the building.

He was welcomed by Nick Smith, Chief Operating Officer for Southmead Hospital Operating Unit, and Rosalie Hartley, Deputy Divisional Director of Operations for the Neurological and Musculoskeletal Sciences Division.

During the tour, Matt heard how the surgical centre, which hosts elective surgery, has boosted our theatre capacity since opening almost 12 months ago. He saw the Medirooms, a Theatre, Rowan inpatients Ward, X-ray, the café and reception and met some of our fabulous colleagues in each area.

Thanks to Matt for his interest and for visiting us, and to all who hosted the visit, including Lara McLean, Clinical Coordinator for Orthopaedics, and Helen Jones, Ward Manager.

Congratulations to two nurses, Michaela and Helen, for being awarded Chief Nursing Officer for England Silver Awards 🏆

Helen and Michaela received the awards for going above and beyond and demonstrating leadership, excellence in clinical practice, and outstanding care.

💡 Helen won the award for her leadership and development of services, patients care and professional development of colleagues.

💙 Michaela was recognised for her compassion and empathy while supporting patients while working on global health initiatives.

Cora Presley, NHS England, Deputy Director for Service Delivery, Transformation & Resilience presented the pair with their awards at a ceremony surrounded by applauding nursing colleagues.

Consultant Ophthalmologist Sunil Mamtora shares simple tips for safe viewing, whether you're using eclipse glasses, a pinhole projector or even a kitchen colander.

☀️ Never look directly at the Sun, even for a few seconds.

👓 If you want to view the eclipse directly, use genuine eclipse glasses from a reputable seller and check they're not damaged. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe, and children should always be closely supervised.

🔭 For a fun alternative, use a pinhole projector or kitchen colander to view a projection of the eclipse. Never look through binoculars, telescopes or cameras, as these can concentrate sunlight and cause serious eye injuries.

If you notice blurred or distorted vision, changes in colour vision, or a dark spot in your vision after viewing the eclipse, seek urgent medical attention.
