Why do I overthink everything?

Do you ever find yourself replaying a conversation hours later, wondering if you said the wrong thing?

Or analysing a message before you send it — and then analysing the response afterwards?

Maybe your mind is constantly trying to work out what could go wrong, what someone else might be thinking, or whether you've made a mistake.

Overthinking can be exhausting.

And sometimes, it can feel like your mind simply won't switch off.

But what if overthinking isn't your mind trying to make things harder?

What if it's your mind trying to keep you safe?

For some people, overthinking can develop as a way of managing uncertainty, anticipating problems, avoiding mistakes or trying to prevent something painful from happening.

It can be particularly difficult when anxiety, trauma or perfectionism are part of the picture.

Rather than simply telling yourself "I need to stop overthinking," it can be helpful to become curious about what your mind is trying to protect you from.

I've written a new article exploring why we overthink, what might be happening underneath it, and how counselling can help you understand these patterns with more compassion.

Am I drinking more than I want to?

Have you noticed that your relationship with alcohol has changed?

Maybe you're drinking more often than you used to.

Perhaps you're drinking alone when you previously only drank socially.

Or maybe alcohol has gradually become something you rely on to switch off, manage anxiety or get through a difficult day.

You might even be wondering:

"Am I drinking more than I want to?"

Asking that question doesn't automatically mean you're addicted to alcohol.

Sometimes it can be helpful to become curious about **what alcohol is doing for you** and what needs it might be meeting.

I've written a new article exploring this, including the connection between alcohol, coping, shame and the nervous system.

You don't have to be ready to stop drinking to start exploring your relationship with alcohol.

"I want counselling... but I have no idea what happens in the first session."

One of the biggest reasons people delay reaching out for therapy is because they don't know what to expect.

Will I have to talk about everything straight away?

What if I cry?

What if I don't know what to say?

The first counselling session isn't about getting everything "right."

It's about giving you the opportunity to tell your story at a pace that feels comfortable for you, ask any questions you may have, and begin building a relationship where you feel safe, heard and understood.

I've written an article explaining what you can expect from a first counselling session, with the hope that it makes taking that first step feel a little less daunting.

Why Doesn't Therapy Feel Like It's Working?

One of the questions I hear most often is:

*"I've been coming to counselling for a while... why doesn't it feel like it's working?"*

Many people expect therapy to make them feel better straight away. So when difficult emotions begin to surface, or you feel like you're going around in circles, it's easy to wonder whether anything is changing.

The truth is that therapy isn't always a straight path.

Sometimes feeling more emotional isn't a sign that therapy is failing. It can be a sign that you're beginning to gently explore parts of yourself that have needed protecting for a long time.

In my latest article, I explore why therapy can sometimes feel difficult, why healing isn't always linear, and why change often happens more gradually than we expect.

If this is something you've been wondering about, I hope the article offers some reassurance.

Why do I always feel on edge?

Do you ever feel like you're constantly waiting for something to go wrong?

Perhaps you find it difficult to switch off, struggle to relax, or notice yourself feeling tense even when everything seems okay.

For many people, living in a constant state of alertness isn't a choice. It's often how the nervous system has learned to protect us after experiencing stress, trauma, or long periods of uncertainty. Over time, your body can become so used to scanning for danger that it continues doing so, even when you're safe.

Feeling on edge doesn't mean you're "too sensitive" or "overreacting." It may be your nervous system trying to keep you safe in the only way it knows how.

In my latest article, I explore why this happens, how it can affect everyday life, and how therapy can help you better understand your nervous system with compassion rather than self-criticism.

Starting counselling can feel like a big step.

One of the most common things I hear is:

"I don't know what to expect."
"What if I don't know what to say?"
"What if I cry?"

If you've ever had those thoughts, you're certainly not alone.

I've written a new article explaining what actually happens during your first counselling session, from the initial consultation through to your first full session. My hope is that it helps answer some of the questions that might be stopping you from reaching out.

There is no expectation to have everything figured out before you come to counselling. We go at your pace, and together we make sense of what has brought you here.

If you are drawn to this card, what is it inviting you to notice?

What feelings come up?
Which cup are you drawn to or avoiding?

In life we are faced with many possibilities, hope, fears, expectations and "what ifs."
Having too many choices can leave us feeling overwhelmed, or disconnected from what truly matters to us.

The Seven of Cups can be a reminder to pause before making decisions. To notice which pathways are driven by fear, which are shaped by other people's expectations and which ones generally align with our values and our authentic self.

Humanistic therapy isn't about us therapist telling you which path to take. It's about you creating the space to explore your experiences, to deepen your self-awareness and to discover the direction that feels most true to you.
