Have you - or someone you know - been diagnosed with breast cancer, and feel in need of support, beyond what their medical team can provide?

This is where the team of therapists and volunteers at The Primrose Centre in Bromley can help.

The Centre is a charity based in Locksbottom (very close to the PRU hospital) and is a wonderful hub of knowledge, care and holistic support for anyone going through all phases of a breast cancer journey.

I work there on Tuesdays offering therapeutic counselling but there's an array of treatments and activities on offer, from specialist bra and wig fittings to reflexology, acupuncture, massage, yoga and guided meditation.

The Primrose Centre also has lymphoedema machines on site and available for home use.

If you feel you'd like to know more, head over to the website. The friendly Reception team are also happy to show you around and explain more if you pop in between 10am and 4pm Monday to Thursday (by appointment on Fridays).

The Primrose Centre offers Breast Cancer Support Centre Services in Orpington, near Bromley and Sevenoaks, Kent.

I provided expert comment for a very sad piece that appeared in today's Guardian that centres on memorialisation and 'marking space' when a loved one dies.

Some people like to keep items to remind themselves of their loved ones, or engage in a particular activity they enjoyed together or perhaps visit a special place or keep a space in the home dedicated to their memory.

Sadly for this family, their ability to remember their son has been affected by an arson attack on their home, and that appears to have affected the grief process.

Help is available, if like Karen, you're struggling to cope with your grief. Do get in touch if you'd like to find out more about local support services and I'll be happy to signpost you to where you can access help.

Did you lose someone important to you when you were just a child?

There’s a new support group in the Bromley area for people just like you, who get the feelings of loss, missed opportunities and sense of difficulty processing your particular type of grief.

Coming together with a community that understands can be an important step towards healing and acceptance, so why not give it a go - or share with someone who might benefit

If you're struggling today, know that you're not alone - and what you see being shared on socials isn't always real. Many people find days when they're 'supposed to be happy' really hard - but help is available.

Please share - you never know who might need to hear that help is out there.

I thought it was time for a formal introduction, so here’s a little bit about me and what I offer as a therapeutic counsellor working in Bromley and Orpington and online.

You can find out more about how and where I work on my website. I’ve popped a link in comments, below

Today, having done additional training, I held my very first Walk & Talk therapy session in a local open space in Bromley.

These are not group sessions: they're 1:1 individual counselling sessions, but instead of taking place in a room where we're sitting down facing each other, we walk side by side in nature.

It really does add something special to the experience. My client - who was someone I'd worked with in the past - commented that the experience was different, but in a good way; that it felt more 'equal' in terms of power dynamic and that they felt able to bring up some subjects that in the past they found difficult.

I've posted a video explaining a little more in my Stories and on Instagram - head over and give me a Follow if you're not already doing so - and get in touch if you'd like to find out more about Walk & Talk sessions being held in the future. Pop me an email at [email protected]

Walk & Talk one-to-one outdoor counselling sessions start this Wednesday.
Lots of reasons to give this a try - I found at least 7 while I was researching this after having a gut-feeling that chair-based counselling may not be for everyone.

May is National Walking Month, which makes me think this is a great time to launch a new service: Walk & Talk therapy.

There's a ton of scientific evidence showing the benefits of spending time outdoors in nature – and throw in movement (always a feel-good win) plus talking therapy, and the pluses are multiple. I've written a blog about Walk & Talk therapy (7 Reasons Why Walk & Talk Therapy Is So Beneficial- link in comments, below) which explains more, but individual sessions will run Wednesday afternoons in Norman Park, Bromley from May 20. I currently have two slots remaining, so please get in touch at [email protected] for more info.

I'm very privileged to work with people living with a breast cancer diagnosis via my work with The Primrose Centre in Locksbottom, Orpington.
Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for those undergoing treatment to also be experiencing symptoms of perimenopause and menopause and the effects of this to show up in the counselling space, including exhaustion, rumination, anxiety and brain fog. It therefore feels important to spread the word about these free support sessions, bookable via the Centre.

Please feel free to share with anyone you know who might be living with breast cancer and struggling with symptoms of menopause - I'll certainly be signposting my clients to these events
