💜. If you have photos of someone who is no longer here that you have never shared, please think about what they might mean to their family.

What may seem like just another picture to you could become one of their most treasured possessions. A smile, a laugh, or a moment they never knew existed can bring comfort and keep precious memories alive.

Life is so short, and once someone is gone, there are no more chances to make new memories. If you have something that could help a family remember the person they love, please consider sharing it. It could mean more than you’ll ever know.

The Coat Hook

💜I was speaking to someone recently whose loved ones coat had hung on the coat hook in the family porch since her passing some years ago. On emptying the house on the passing of their dad they still could not bring themselves to remove the coat. They took a picture. Locked the house and handed over the keys.

The Coat Hook - Every home has one.

A coat that no one can quite bring themselves to move.

Months later, it’s still there.

Not because someone forgot.

Because moving it somehow makes everything feel more real.

Grief is never just one overwhelming moment.

Often it hides in ordinary things.

A coat hook.
A mug.
A pair of slippers by the back door.

It’s amazing how everyday objects become monuments to love.

💜. The lighting of a candle can mean so much to so many people. It’s something I do often. I often light a candle while I’m writing a service, as I’m preparing for it, on the day itself, or even the night before. We all find comfort in different ways, don’t we?

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit Windsor Castle, and as I walked into St George’s Chapel, I felt drawn to light a candle.

I’ve always found lighting a candle in a church comforting and quite cathartic. But this felt different. I was standing in the place where Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family are laid to rest.

As I lit the candle, I found myself thinking about our Queen, all that she had given and all that she had sacrificed. Then my thoughts turned to those I’ve loved and lost over the years, especially those I’ve been missing this year.

As I stood there watching the flame flicker, I also thought about all the families who have entrusted me with the privilege of leading services for their loved ones over the past five and a half years.

It was such a peaceful moment, and one I’ll carry with me for a very long time.

I truly am honoured to do what I do. It is a privilege.

To all the families I’ve had the honour of supporting, I hope you know that your loved ones are still remembered. Their stories stay with me, and so do the memories of the people you asked me to celebrate. Long after the service is over, they are never forgotten.

Feel free, should you wish, to add the name or names of those who have passed in the comments ……. This candle is for all.

💜 Six funerals last week, each one for someone from a completely different walk of life.

A barmaid, a machinist, a nurse, a teacher, a painter and decorator and a computer engineer.

Every service was different, every story unique. A week of celebrating lives that couldn’t have been more varied.

💜 Today, disgraced Funeral Director, Robert Bush was sentenced to 20 years in prison, but no sentence will ever be enough for the pain and suffering he has caused those families. The disrespect he has shown.

My heart breaks for every one of them. To have lived through the unimaginable and unacceptable and just not knowing what happened to the people they loved, is a burden no family should ever have to carry, besides anything else it is an anguish they have endured and will continue to endure.

What he did was utterly disgraceful and that is putting it politely.

I feel incredibly honoured and privileged to stand alongside funeral professionals who uphold the values of dignity, compassion and respect that every family has the absolute right to expect when they place their trust in a funeral home.

There will, no doubt, be many statements over the coming days about his appalling crimes. For me, it comes down to this: every funeral professional with integrity will be sickened by what he did. His actions—and his failures to act, betrayed not only an entire profession built on care, trust and respect, but showed no respect whatsoever for those who had passed and devastated the families he was entrusted to serve.

My thoughts are with every family affected today. I hope they continue to find strength and support in one another as they live with the consequences of his unforgivable and incomprehensible actions.

💜. One thing I have learned as a celebrant is that we do not all find comfort in the same place/way, and that is perfectly okay.

Recently, after a service, someone questioned a phrase I had used about a loved one being reunited with those who had gone before. I respected their right to hold a different belief, just as I hope my role in honouring a family’s wishes is respected.

I would never question a service led according to someone else’s faith or beliefs. Every family deserves the opportunity to say goodbye in a way that reflects the life, values and hopes of the person they have lost.

Grief is deeply individual and personal. My role is not to tell people what they should believe, but to help them create a farewell that brings comfort, love and dignity to those left behind.

In the quiet moments after every service, my hope is always the same: that those who arrived carrying the weight of grief leave feeling just a little lighter, a little more at peace, and deeply assured that their loved one has been honoured in the way that worked for them bringing comfort and enabling they themselves to stand on a firmer footing.

Through it all, may I never lose sight of the wheel I turn for.
