Earlier this summer, I did an interview with Queen Margaret University, where I did my undergraduate degree and PhD, as part of a celebration of allied health professionals, and to talk about my career in SLT. I’m now pleased to share the video with you all!!

šŸŽ’ Happy First Day of School (for tomorrow)!

I’m posting this a day early because tomorrow I’ll be busy helping my own daughter get ready for her first day of Primary 1 šŸ„¹šŸ’•

There are so many firsts happening this week for lots of you…the first day of nursery, the first day of Primary 1, the first day of a new school year, and even the first day of high school for some!

No matter what stage your child is at, it’s a huge milestone filled with pride, excitement, nerves, and joy…for both children and parents.

I have 12 clients starting Primary 1 tomorrow, and I couldn’t be prouder of how far they’ve come. Watching them grow into confident communicators ready for this next chapter is such a privilege!

Here’s to all of you little learners and the families cheering on from the playground! You’ve got this! 🌟

šŸŒž Happy Friday!
It’s been a busy first week back after my holiday! Lots of familiar faces, some new ones, and so many fun sessions to ease back into the routine!

This afternoon is all about catching up: creating resources for my clients getting ready to start school, writing reports, and making my way through the mountain of emails waiting for me. If you’ve reached out over the past couple of weeks and haven’t heard back yet, thank you so much for your patience. I’m working through everything and will get back to you as soon as I can šŸ’›

🌟 Wonderful Wednesdays!

Talk about success!! After sharing earlier about two amazing discharges, two more wee legends have been in for reassessment and both have shown fantastic progress! šŸŽ‰

Each has increased their percent consonants correct and mastered their target sounds, both working hard on /k/ and /g/. These two are heading into Primary 1 next week, confident and ready with their new sounds!

One will be taking a wee break to focus on generalisation, while the other will be back fresh in September to start on a new sound.

What a day 🄳

Not one but two discharges in one day…what an emotional rollercoaster! I’m feeling all the feelings today. So unbelievably proud of these two superstars and everything they’ve achieved, and equally a little sad that I won’t get to see them every week!

✨ Client 1: One year of speech sound therapy → 9 new sounds, eliminated several error patterns, and now telling imaginative stories with speech that’s fully understood. What a transformation!

✨ Client 2: From a reluctant 2‑year‑old speaker to a confident 4‑year‑old using full sentences, following multi‑step directions, and acquiring multiple new sounds. Incredible growth. She will continue with her NHS SLT for her final steps!

I could not be more delighted for these two. Watching their confidence grow over the past year reminds me exactly why I love my job and the impact we get to make on these little lives.

Thank you for choosing and trusting me and I look forward to keeping in touch to see you continue to grow! 🩷

While on holiday, I met a mum to an autistic preschooler. We spoke at length by the pool one day and it’s something I’ve thought about since. She didn’t know I was an SLT and I didn’t tell her, I just listened.

She shared that earlier that day her son was having a hard moment at the beach. Another parent had made a negative comment to her, and she walked away upset. Later, she went back to advocate for her son, explaining that he is autistic and asking them to be more thoughtful in future interactions with other families. I bumped into her again later that evening and she thanked me for listening to her, and said that saying it out loud helped her process what had happened and that she felt more positive after speaking with me.

I hear stories like this often in my clinic. Moments where parents carry love, exhaustion, pride, and protectiveness all at once. One thing for sure is that all of my parents are fierce advocates for their child, like the mum I met on holiday.

But it reminded me of something important…sometimes we don’t need to offer advice or even have an opinion (something I can find difficult at times being in a profession where I am expected to give advice!). We just need to listen to people’s stories and make them feel heard and validated.

We never truly know what a child or family is navigating. As parents, and as kind humans, let’s choose compassion and connection first…one of my core values as an SLT and something I hope shines through during my interactions with clients and their families daily 🩵

I’m back!! After a two week holiday soaking up family time, The Speech Hut is officially open again and the sun has come out to celebrate with us šŸŒž

It’s a busy one ahead with 30 brilliant clients, both familiar faces and new friends joining us this August.

It’s also a big month for so many families…schools are starting back, and my own wee girl is heading into P1!

Later this month (w/b 24th), I’ll also be completing ADOS‑2 (autism assessment) training, expanding the assessment tools we can offer to families. I’ll keep you up to date with more updates soon šŸ‘€!!

What an afternoon! The sunshine has been absolutely beautiful, and we’ve been taking full advantage here at The Speech Hut spending the whole afternoon out in the garden. Outdoor therapy is one of my favourite ways to blend speech and language goals with movement, sensory regulation, and fun.

Here are a few ways we take our sessions outside:

• Speech sounds — practising target sounds in words or sentences, with a round of the obstacle course after each trial for movement breaks that keep little bodies regulated and engaged.
• Following directions — using the obstacle course to build action words, sequencing skills, and understanding of multi-step instructions.
• Vocabulary building — pairing themed stories or songs with movement breaks to help learn new words and sentences.
• Bubbles — but not just any bubbles! We follow instructions to pop bubbles with different body parts, target functional requesting (ā€œmore bubbles!ā€), and build vocabulary while being silly.

Movement isn’t just fun, it’s also powerful. It supports sensory regulation, boosts attention, and helps children feel grounded and ready to learn. When therapy feels like play, progress follows.
