Chambon

Another training aid consisting of rope and leather. It attaches to a roller or girth, runs up to the horse's poll where a headpiece sits, and then back down to connect to the bit rings. It is designed for lunging only and should not be used for ridden work. The Chambon works by applying pressure to the poll and mouth only when the horse raises its head above the desired position. When the head is lowered and stretched downwards, the pressure is released.

Benefits
✅Helps to encourage the horse to stretch down
✅Encourages the horse to seek a soft, consistent contact through the principal of pressure and release
✅Helps to increase muscle engagement
✅Helps to improve balance and straightness
✅A simple and easy design compared to other training aids but requires a handler which has a good lunging technique

Contraindications
❌Incorrect fitting can cause discomfort, resistance, or tension
❌Can create over flexion/bend
❌Does not directly engage the hindquarters
❌Requires an experienced handler with a good lunging technique to be effective
❌Use with caution on young or inexperienced horses

EquiAmi

A training aid designed for both lunging and ridden flatwork. It features a rope system that runs from the horse's chest, to the bit, to the roller/girth, and around the hindquarters. It works by applying a gentle pressure-and-release mechanism, to encourage the horse to work in a correct posture without forcing a head position.

Benefits
✅Suitable for lunging and ridden work (with or without a rider)
✅Encourages correct muscle development
✅Helps improve balance, rhythm and overall way of going
✅Encourages activation of the core muscles
✅Promotes engagement of the hindquarters
✅Supports a soft, consistent contact with the bit
✅Helps develop strength and coordination
✅Less restrictive than many traditional training aids

Contraindications
❌Incorrect fitting or over-tightening can result in discomfort, resistance, or tension
❌Misuse may cause a false outline
❌Overuse can lead to dependency on the aid

Pessoa

A more advanced lunging aid consisting of ropes and pulleys that run from the horse's hindquarters, through the bit, and back to the roller. When fitted correctly, it creates a connection between the hindquarters and the forehand using a pressure a release principle.

Due to the Pessoa’s design correct fitting and use are essential. The Pessoa can typically be attached in four different positions on the roller (varies between the design).
1️⃣Between the front legs
2️⃣On the ring at the girth region
3️⃣On the next ring above the girth attachment
4️⃣On the top ring near the horse's withers

Benefits
✅Encourages greater engagement of the hindquarters
✅Helps promote development of the topline when used as part of a correct training programme
✅Encourages activation of the core muscles
✅Adjustable attachment points allow the system to be adapted for different training stages and exercises
✅Encourages improved balance and rhythm
✅Helps develop strength and coordination
✅Helps encourage straighter movement by promoting more even use of the body

Contraindications
❌Incorrect fitting may result in discomfort, tension, or resistance
❌Young, inexperienced, or particularly sensitive horses without careful introduction
❌Risk or creating a false outline

Two of my favourite in-hand pole exercises.

1️⃣ Lateral Step Pole (or Raised Lateral Step Pole)

Lay approximately four poles end to end. Lead your horse alongside the poles and ask them to step laterally over the pole. Once all four feet have crossed, ask them to step back over to the original side. Continue along the length of the poles, then repeat the exercise.

For an added challenge, the poles can be raised slightly to encourage greater joint flexion, proprioception, and muscle engagement.

2️⃣ Alternating Raised Poles

Set out five to six poles in a straight line, raising alternate ends of each pole. Lead your horse through the centre of the poles, allowing them to carefully negotiate the varying heights. Once they have completed the line, turn around and repeat the exercise in the opposite direction.

Benefits-
✅Improves coordination, balance, and body awareness
✅Encourages muscle activation and engagement
✅Helps develop symmetry between the left and right sides
✅Increases joint flexion and range of motion
✅Improves flexibility and mobility
✅Encourages an active stride
✅Strengthens the topline and core muscles
✅Promotes straightness and correct movement patterns
✅Builds strength with low-impact exercise, making it suitable for most horses
Always adapt to suit the individual horse's age, fitness level, and any existing health conditions.

⛰️Surfaces⛰️

Different surfaces place different demands on a horse's musculoskeletal system. When introduced gradually and used appropriately, working on a variety of surfaces alongside a conditioning programme may provide several benefits including-

🙌🏼Improved muscle balance and symmetry
🙌🏼Enhanced coordination, balance, and proprioception
🙌🏼Reduced muscle stiffness
🙌🏼Improved flexibility and overall suppleness
🙌🏼Contributes to stronger, more resilient muscles, tendons, and ligaments
🙌🏼Supports healthy bone adaptation and increased bone density through appropriate progressive loading
🙌🏼Improved cardiovascular fitness and stamina
👏🏼Supports healthy hoof development and adaptation
🙌🏼Reduced risk of repetitive strain and overuse injuries
🙌🏼Helps to prepare horses for working and competing on a range of terrain

Surface Types
🌱Grass
🏝️Sand
🛘Hard tracks or roads
🪵Arena surfaces (fibre, rubber, or woodchip)
☔️Muddy or deep ground
🌊Water

Each surface has its advantages/limitations and therefore choosing the most appropriate footing for the type of work, while considering the horse's age, fitness, experience, can help reduce the risk of injury. Inappropriate footing may increase the risk of injuries such as-

❗️Muscle strains
❗️Tendon and ligament injuries
❗️Splints
❗️Joint soreness or inflammation
❗️Hoof bruising
❗️Slips, trips, and falls

🐴Equine Tension🐴

One question I'm often asked is "Where do horses tend to hold the most tension?"

The three main areas I commonly find are:
1️⃣Lower neck into the chest region
2️⃣Along the back
3️⃣Hamstrings

Muscle tension can have a much bigger effect on the body than many people realise. Horses just like humans, will often compensate when they are uncomfortable. Over time, this compensation can lead to additional strain, stiffness, and wear and tear in other areas of the body. By identifying and addressing tension early, we can help support the horse's comfort, movement, and overall wellbeing before it develops into a bigger issue.

Regular massage sessions can help to detect areas of tightness, improve muscle function, encourage relaxation, and keep your horse feeling and performing at their best!
