Please show your support for our Salli Hardstone who is putting her best foot forward for Dementia in September. Well done Sal ! Xx

Hi there, This month, I’m walking 30 Miles for Dementia UK – a cause close to my heart. Just Β£10 could pay for the telephone costs of two families calling its free Dementia Helpline, so any support would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

Who Cares for the Carer?
I've been reflecting on research around dementia risk and what it means for those of us working in care.

We spend our working lives looking after other people.

We make sure people eat and drink, support medication, encourage movement, notice changes in wellbeing, provide companionship and think about falls, nutrition, hydration, mental health and so much more.

But how often do we stop and think about our own health?

This is particularly relevant to domiciliary care.

Our working days don't necessarily follow a traditional 9–5 pattern. We can have early starts, late finishes, split shifts and irregular hours. We work around breakfast, lunch and teatime, travelling between different homes and fitting our own meals, drinks and breaks around somebody else's needs.

Because caring comes naturally to so many people, it can be easy to put ourselves last.

β€œI'll eat when I get home.”

β€œI'll get some water later.”

β€œI'll exercise tomorrow.”

β€œI'll make that appointment when I've got time.”

Sound familiar?

The 2024 Lancet Commission identified 14 potentially modifiable dementia risk factors, including hypertension, high LDL cholesterol, physical inactivity, smoking, obesity, diabetes, excessive alcohol consumption, hearing loss, traumatic brain injury, depression, social isolation, air pollution and untreated vision loss.

Having one of these risk factors does not mean someone will develop dementia. Some things, including age and genetics, simply cannot be changed.

But there are things we can influence.

Do we know our blood pressure?

Do we know our cholesterol?

Are we getting enough exercise?

Are we looking after our hearing and eyesight?

Are we eating properly, rather than grabbing something quickly between calls?

Are we drinking enough water?

Are we getting enough sleep?

Are we maintaining friendships and social connections?

Are we giving ourselves time to switch off?

And perhaps most importantly:

Are we putting ourselves on the list of people we care for?
Working in care is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be physically and emotionally demanding.

Looking after ourselves isn't selfish. It enables us to continue giving the best care we can.

We don't have to change everything.

Perhaps we just need to identify one positive step.

A health check. A daily walk. More water. Better food. Getting our hearing checked. Making time for a friend. Better sleep. Finding something new to learn.

Or simply recognising that our health matters too.

Because the people who spend their working lives caring for everyone else deserve to care for themselves too. ❀️

High blood pressure can be easy to miss, especially in later life - but left unchecked, it can increase the risk of serious health problems, including heart disease, stroke and vascular dementia. 🩺❀️

The good news? Small, steady changes can make a real difference.

From encouraging gentle movement and nourishing meals, to helping loved ones keep on top of medication and appointments, Blossom Home Care supports older people to care for their wellbeing while staying safe and comfortable at home.

There are many things I'm proud of as Registered Manager at Blossom Homecare, but one of the greatest is the passion and dedication our team brings to supporting people living with dementia.

Every person we care for has their own story, their own memories, and their own way of seeing the world. A dementia diagnosis doesn't change who they are, and that's something we never forget. We take the time to get to know the person behind the diagnosis, the things they love, the routines that bring comfort, and the moments that make them smile.

For us, dementia care is about so much more than meeting needs. It's about building trust, creating meaningful connections, and helping people maintain their independence, dignity, and sense of self for as long as possible.

One of the values that guides everything we do is: "No decision about you, without you." We believe the people we support should always have a voice in their care. By listening, involving families, and working together, we can provide care that is truly centred around the individual.

Every day, we see the difference that compassionate, personalised care can make, not just to the person living with dementia, but to their loved ones as well. It is a privilege to be part of that journey and to lead a team that genuinely cares.

Thank you to our amazing carers who go above and beyond every day, and to the wonderful people and families who trust us to support them in their own homes. ❀️

A Day in the Life of a Blossom Homecare Manager 🌸

Have you ever wondered what a typical day looks like for a Homecare Manager? The truth is... no two days are ever the same, and that's exactly why we love what we do!

Our day often starts early, checking on our care team, reviewing the day's visits, responding to any overnight updates, and making sure every one of our service users has the support they need.

From there, it could include:
πŸ’œ Visiting service users and carrying out quality assurance visits.
πŸ“‹ Completing care assessments and reviews.
πŸ‘©β€πŸ’Ό Supporting and mentoring our amazing care team.
πŸ“ž Speaking with families to provide reassurance and updates.
🀝 Working with GPs, district nurses, social workers and other healthcare professionals.
πŸ“š Organising training, supervisions and ensuring our team has the knowledge and confidence to provide exceptional care.
πŸ“ Keeping up with the ever-important paperwork and compliance that helps us maintain the highest standards of care.
πŸŽ‰ Celebrating the achievements of our staff and recognising the incredible difference they make every single day.

But the most rewarding part of the role?

Seeing someone smile because they feel safe, valued and listened to. Watching a member of staff grow in confidence. Receiving a message from a family saying, "Thank you for looking after Mum."

Being a manager isn't just about managing,it’s about leading with compassion, supporting an incredible team, solving problems, and making a real difference to people's lives every single day.

To our wonderful carers, office team, service users and families... thank you for making every day worthwhile. ❀️
