Try this before your next cigarette or v**e.

Smoke standing up. Don’t smoke in your special chair. Don’t pair it with anything else.

Just smoke or v**e at the back door, looking at a boring view.

Not over a nice coffee. Not in the pub garden. Not on your balcony feeling cosmopolitan.

At the back door. Looking at the bins. Feeling a bit bored that you had to do this because you had this need.

That is what a cigarette or v**e actually is without all the associations wrapped around it.

Not a pleasure. A chore you felt compelled to do.

Scaring smokers about their health makes them less likely to quit.

My belief is that the more scared you are that you can’t stop and that it’s killing you, the more anxious you become. And the more anxious you become, the less you’re gonna be able to engage with the process. You’d rather just go back into denial.

There was a really interesting study. Forty percent of smokers who had never tried to quit completely believed the health messages. But only ten percent of smokers who had tried to quit and failed believed those messages.

Because if you’re a smoker and you think you’ll quit one day, you can believe the health information. Take away the belief that you can quit, and suddenly you’ve got I’m a smoker, here’s this scary health information, and I can’t stop.

And then it’s like... oh, that’s probably rubbish. Everything gives you cancer these days. Load of nonsense.

So I don’t want to trigger people into that la la la la la state. I want them optimistic and positive.

Why people who quit might still go back years later.

If you quit believing you are giving up something you love, something that helps you cope, something that is part of your daily ritual, you quit with a sense of deprivation and loss.

And that might never go.

It doesn’t matter how many weeks or months or years you have been smoke free. You will still remember with this rosy glow of memory.

My coffee is never quite the same without it. My post work wind down is never the same.

And then one day, in a moment of stress or celebration or weakness, you have just one. Because deep down you never stopped believing it was giving you something.

That is not a willpower failure. That is an incomplete quit.

The cognitive work has to happen alongside everything else. Once you genuinely believe there is nothing to give up, the rosy glow disappears. And so does the risk of going back.

Meet Nitch. Ni****ne Itch.

He’s the voice in your head that keeps you hooked. And he has a lot to say.

He’ll tell you to just try it for a while. You can always give up later.

He’ll let himself in without being invited and make himself completely at home.

He’ll jump in your trolley without asking.

He’ll tell you that quitting will be hell and your life will fall apart.

He’ll demand your attention no matter what you’re doing or where you are.

He’ll beg to come back in when you’ve finally got rid of him. Just a few puffs. I promise not to get you addicted again.

He’ll send you to the bin to find dimps when he’s really desperate.

And he’ll whisper that all your mates do it so why can’t you.

Nitch has propaganda. He tells you nonsense about how much your life would be completely terrible without him.

But here’s the thing. None of it is true.

One in four secondary school children have v**ed.

Ten percent of them v**e occasionally or regularly.

And here is why that matters so much.

Children who v**e have poorer coping strategies than children who don’t. There are direct effects of ni****ne on the brain. On learning. On impulsivity. On memory. On resilience.

And this is happening at the worst possible time.

Secondary school. New subjects. New friendships. Social relationships becoming so much more complex. Exams. The beginning of adult life.

This is the period where children should be building resilience and coping skills for everything that lies ahead. Their brains are still developing. They need every advantage they can get.

Instead, a substance that impairs learning, impairs cognition and affects impulsivity is becoming a normal part of their day.

I think that is a national scandal.

Ni****ne kidnaps your ability to self regulate.

Think about that for a second.

It makes you more stressed. It increases your need to cope. And then it takes away the very thing you need to cope with it.

So every stressful moment of your day feels harder without it. And you genuinely believe you can’t handle things without reaching for it.

That’s not a character flaw. That’s what ni****ne does to you.

You’re not less stressed because you smoked. You’re just less stressed than you were thirty seconds ago. Because the withdrawal eased off. Temporarily.

That is not coping. That is being controlled.

Four reasons why life is far far worse as a ni****ne addict.

1️⃣ Ni****ne is a direct stressor. It acts on the fight flight system. It stresses you out.

2️⃣ The minute you stop, you begin to withdraw. Your stress levels increase, your mood drops, and you get that restless hungry feeling. A ni****ne shaped hole that has been completely artificially created and never used to exist.

3️⃣ The stress of managing a habit for your whole life. Never running out. Finding somewhere you can use. Spending money on it every single day.

4️⃣ The self concept. You are someone who can’t function without an artificial crutch to get you through your day.

That is what the cigarette is actually doing to you.

What’s your addiction character?

I’ll tell you mine.

I call it NITCH. Ni****ne Itch.

He’s irritating, time consuming, controlling, horrible. He stresses you out because he’s like feed me, feed me, feed me. And while he’s hassling you, you can’t settle to anything else. He just makes you irritable, anxious, and on edge.

But the worst thing about him? He has propaganda.

He tells you nonsense all the time about how much your life would be completely terrible without him.

That voice in your head that says you need it to relax, to focus, to cope. That’s not you. That’s NITCH.

And once you can see him clearly, you can start to challenge him.

I used to smoke to warm up. I was wrong.

I was a poor student, cold in my flat. And I genuinely thought, I’ll have a cigarette. It’ll warm me up.

It doesn’t warm you up. Smoking causes vasoconstriction. It makes you colder.

But that didn’t matter. Because the brain will come up with any excuse to satisfy that I want a cigarette voice.

It warms me up. It relaxes me. It helps me concentrate. It calms me down.

None of it is true. All of it feels completely real.

That is the trap. Not the ni****ne. The story you tell yourself about why you need it.

You never actually liked smoking.

You didn’t like your first one. You didn’t like your tenth one. You don’t like your thousandth one.

Ci******es are actively unpleasant. It’s like inhaling smoke from a barbecue. And yet you find yourself wanting one.

So your brain has to come up with a reason. It relaxes me. It helps me focus. It warms me up.

None of that is true. But let’s not let reality get in the way of a good excuse to satisfy that I want a cigarette voice.

That voice isn’t you. It’s the addiction talking.
