ONE DAY FIRST AID

Would you know what to do if someone collapsed and their heart stops whilst at home?

Around 80% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests (the heart has stopped) happen at home — which is why knowing basic first aid and CPR really can make the difference when it matters most.

I have spaces available on my One Day Basic First Aid Courses on 15th & 16th September, held at Boulder Adventures here in Llanberis.

You can choose to have the course certificated as Workplace Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) or Basic First Aid.

Don’t wait until you need these skills — make sure you have them. ❤️

BASIC FIRST AID COURSE — BECAUSE “HOLD ON, I’LL GOOGLE IT” IS NOT A FIRST AID PLAN

You know that moment when someone gets hurt and suddenly everyone becomes a medical expert?

“Put butter on it.”
“Give them some water.”
“Rub it.”
“Don’t move them!”
“Actually… move them!”
“Has anyone got a plaster?”

Meanwhile, the casualty is lying there wondering why they didn’t just stay in bed that morning.

My one-day Basic First Aid Course will teach you what to actually do when something goes wrong — without panicking, freezing or resorting to advice from Dave down the pub.

You just need to know enough to make a difference when it matters.

Where: Boulder Adventures, Llanberis
When: September 15th & 16th
What: One-day course (certificated as Basic or EFAW)

Come along, learn some genuinely useful skills, have a laugh and leave knowing that if someone collapses in front of you, your first thought won’t be: “Oh bugger… what do I do now?”

THEY’VE COLLAPSED… WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Imagine you’re with a friend, a family member or a colleague when suddenly they collapse.

You can’t wake them up.

They don’t seem to be breathing normally.

Would you know what to do?

A cardiac arrest (the heart stops and the person falls to the floor) is one of the most time-critical emergencies you can face. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival.

If you can’t ‘wake them up’ then dial 999/112 and put the phone on speaker.

❤️ Start CPR.

⚡ They need an AED (Defib) if one is available and follow its instructions.

An AED (Defib) is designed to talk you through what to do. You cannot “do it wrong” by following its instructions — and you could help save someone’s life.

First aid is about recognising an emergency, taking action and having the confidence to help.

That’s why learning these skills matters. My next HSE Emergency First Aid at Work courses are:

15th & 16th September
Venue: Boulder Adventures, Llanberis

If you’ve always thought “I really should do a first aid course” — perhaps now is the time.

WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE STARTED CHOKING?

It’s one of those emergencies we hope we never have to deal with… but knowing what to do could make the difference between a frightening incident and a tragedy.

Between 2018 and 2022, 1,420 people died from choking in England and Wales — 1,118 of those deaths involved food (Office for National Statistics).

When someone is severely choking, there may be very little time to think. Recognising the signs and knowing how to respond with back blows, abdominal thrusts and, if necessary, CPR can give someone their best chance while waiting for emergency services.

And choking is just one of the emergencies covered on a good basic first aid course.

I’ve got two upcoming one-day Basic First Aid courses:

Tuesday 15th September
Wednesday 16th September
Venue: Boulder Adventures, Llanberis

Come along, learn practical life-saving skills and, most importantly, build the confidence to actually use them when it matters.

EXERTIONALY HEAT STROKE

Sweating does NOT rule out heatstroke.

One of the myths I regularly talk about on my Outdoor First Aid courses is the idea that “if someone is sweating, they can’t have heatstroke.”

I see this repeated on social media every summer — and it’s simply not a reliable way to rule out a life-threatening heat illness.

A person with heatstroke can still be sweating, particularly if they are well hydrated and their core temperature has risen rapidly.

Changes in mental state (AcVPU) are a much more concerning sign — confusion, agitation, unusual behaviour, reduced consciousness or collapse should raise serious concerns.

Heatstroke is a medical emergency. Recognise it early, act quickly and get emergency medical help.

CANINE FIRST AID COURSE

A huge thank you to everyone who joined me yesterday and, more importantly, totally immersed yourselves in the day.

The best courses aren’t just about me standing at the front talking — they’re about sharing experiences, asking questions, telling stories and learning from each other. And yesterday’s group brought plenty of all of that!

Thank you for your enthusiasm, your honesty, your stories and your willingness to get stuck into the practical scenarios. I hope you all left feeling a little more confident and prepared to help a dog when it really matters.

Next Canine First Aid course: 1st November

If you’d like to learn practical, potentially lifesaving first aid for dogs, get in touch or visit the Active First Aid website for more information and booking details.
