The deepest pain anyone will ever experience is their own.
No matter how close someone is to you, no matter how much they love you, they will never feel exactly what you feel. They are receiving your pain through their own nervous system. Their own subconscious history. Their own unresolved wounds. Which means the version of your hurt that lands with them will always be a translation, never the original.
This is one of the hardest things to accept when someone causes you pain.
We exhaust ourselves trying to make them understand. Explaining it a different way. Going over it again. Hoping that if we just find the right words they will finally feel the weight of what they did.
Sometimes they never will.
And that is not always cruelty. Sometimes it is simply capacity. The capacity to sit with discomfort is something the nervous system has to learn. And not everyone has done that work.
So instead of measuring people by whether they fully understand what they put you through, start paying attention to something far more revealing.
Can they listen without immediately defending themselves. Can they sit with the discomfort of knowing they caused harm even if their subconscious is pulling them toward self protection. Can they reflect honestly. Can they change.
Because someone who can do those things, even imperfectly, even slowly, has the emotional intelligence and nervous system regulation to genuinely show up for you. And someone who cannot, regardless of how much they claim to care, is still running old subconscious patterns that will keep producing the same hurt in different clothing.
Trauma changes the way we receive and process pain. It changes our attachment patterns. It changes what we believe we deserve and how much discomfort we are willing to sit with on behalf of someone else. Which means the people in your life who have never addressed their own subconscious wounds will always have a ceiling on how present they can be for yours.
Pay less attention to whether people get it.
Pay more attention to what they do when they do not.
