Living here in Carlisle, Lughnasadh always feels a little closer to home.

Many people know it as the beginning of the harvest, but fewer know that the god Lugh has long been connected with this part of the world. Some believe his name echoes through places across Cumbria, reminding us that these stories were once woven into the landscape itself.

Whether or not you honour the old gods, I think there’s something timeless about this festival.

It’s a moment to stop chasing what’s next and notice what has already grown.

The harvest isn’t just found in fields. It’s in the conversations that changed us, the skills we’ve learned, the friendships we’ve nurtured, the challenges we’ve survived, and the quieter victories that no one else may ever see.

Perhaps that’s what Lammas asks of us: not to strive for more for just one day, but to acknowledge that we are already carrying the fruits of seeds planted months—or even years—ago.

So today I’ll be taking a moment to give thanks for the visible and invisible harvest alike.

However you celebrate, I wish you a blessed Lughnasadh. 🌾
