If you’re over 40 and suddenly feel like your entire body has filed a formal complaint… this one’s for you. 😆 Why Does Everything Suddenly Ache?!
Ever reached your 40s or 50s and thought, “Hang on… why does getting out of bed now require a full risk assessment?”
Your knees hurt. Your hips are grumpy. Your back has started sending strongly worded emails. Even your shoulders seem to have developed opinions.
And no, you’re not imagining it.
As we go through perimenopause and menopause, declining oestrogen can affect much more than periods and hot flushes. Oestrogen receptors are found throughout the musculoskeletal system, and changing hormone levels can influence muscle, joints, tendons, bones and how we experience pain.
Basically, your body has gone from “I can do that” to “Let’s see how we feel tomorrow.”
One of the problems is that we naturally lose muscle mass and strength as we age. If we do less because things hurt, we can become weaker. Then everyday activities become harder, which can make us move less… which can make us weaker still.
It’s a particularly annoying little cycle.
But here’s the good news: your body is remarkably adaptable.
Strength training gives your muscles, bones, joints and connective tissues a reason to get stronger.
It can help you build and maintain muscle, improve bone strength, support your joints and improve how confidently and efficiently you move.
And perhaps most importantly, getting stronger can make everyday life feel easier.
Climbing stairs? Easier.
Getting off the floor? Easier.
Carrying shopping? Easier.
Picking up your grandkids? Easier.
Getting off the sofa without making a noise that sounds like a haunted wardrobe? Much easier.
And you don’t need to become a gym fanatic or lift enormous weights.
You simply need to give your body the right amount of challenge, consistently.
So if you’re thinking, “I’m getting older, therefore I’m supposed to ache,” think again.
Getting older is inevitable.
Feeling increasingly weak and stiff doesn’t have to be.
Your muscles haven’t retired just because your hormones are changing.
Give them a reason to stay strong.
